Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
If the car still has the stock harness (I assume it does since you took out the stock deck), go to your local car audio store and get a GM to Pioneer adapter and splice it into the pigtail that came with your new deck. If you ask real nice, they may even splice the two together for you, then all you need to do is plug it in
EDIT: You probably will also need a GM antenna adapter to correct for the different size plugs...

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
i just put a pioneer system in my car and you can buy the adapter to fit from best buy. You can also buy a little adapter for the antenna too because the reciever in the pioneer unit is much larger than the stock antenna tip. I also bought 6x9s and 4x6s from best buy, and the dash install kit from best buy too. I spent a total of 90 bucks i think it was not including the 100 for the system itself. Very affordable doing it myself.

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
I just put a sony xlpod in my 88 gta. It was extremely easy once I figured out what wires are what. I just went to best buy and got the 1988-2004 GM harness and crimped my sony pigtail onto it. no problems what so ever. The harness was $23 though...

i got 4 speakers, and all the hardware and adapter cords for 90 bucks at best buy... thats not bad seeing you can spend more than that on speakers alone...

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
nope not a bad ground. If it was a bad ground it would most likely not come on at all. Seeing how its a pioneer there wiring colors are a lil different but it should tell you which is which on the top or bottom of the stereo. If you cut your factory harness then im sry but oh well. If you got the factor harness plug in tail then thats good. A red wire usually of thicker gauge wire is the constant wire. A yellow wire is the ignition hot wire. This is what will send the power signal to turn on and off your radio when you have your car in the run or accesory settings. Black is ground and the rest are for your speakers, remote turn on wire for amp, power attena, dimmer control, etc. Those depend on car.
I would check your igntion constant wire. If your radio is turning on and not turning off then you might have wired the radio so it has constant power. This would cause you to have turn it off manunally. Just post back if your confused.

It should be red or orange. I dont remember what 88's color code was. Its been a long time since ive worked on an 88. You could always just probe the wire and see which one is 12v hot.

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
quick side poll: Did anyone else installing a pioneer deck have issues getting it to fit? Mine wouldnt push in far enough to the bracket to lock in i pulled it out and saw 2 little black humps on the sides that the 2 corners were hitting, i dont know what they did but theyre gone now lol Anyone else have to do that?

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
mine was JUST like that. those 2 little black humps were in the way, they're for a little vent thats next to your leg when you sit in your seat. i dont have a heater or A/C cause they dont work. i dont plan on having a heater or anyting anyway so i took a hammer and broke it out (i couldnt get anything in there to cut it without pullin the center counsel out.) so yep i broke it out and took that metal plate that held in the stock radio and it all fit good.

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
You could also use a heat gun to soften the heater ducts and form them to where your deck will fit. I've also seen this done to the defrost ducting in the dash to make a larger than stock speaker fit. This also maintains the functionality of the heater ducting.

Re: I need help installing a new pioneer deck
You know you can get a haines or chiltons manual and they have the wiring diagrams and you can take both diagrams and put it together really easy. As for the unit hitting things in the compartment I had no problems except with the metal bracket and I usually take that out.
