Capacitor before speakers?

I just replaced my front speakers. These were 10W nom 20W max, I put some 20W Nom 130W max. There was something like a capacitor (I did not remove the plastic yet) on one wire of each one. What is it for? Reduce power? Phase correction?
Anyway I removed them, it is working fine. The audio is a two years old mp3 player 4X50W. Can someone explain me?

Re: Capacitor before speakers?

Was it touching both wires to the speaker? or were both contacts on one wire.

Re: Capacitor before speakers?

Hi,

If you are having trouble with the front speakers over-driving with bass settings, then you would install the capacitor in series with one of the leads- not across the speaker leads.

take a look at this link:

Re: Capacitor before speakers?

Thanks you are right on the point. The capacitors were "in serie" (just on one wire).
My electrical classes were not so fresh... but now I remember, it creates high pass filter really useful if you have a boomer installed (which was previously the case in my car). Now I need to look at the rear ones to remove it too.

Re: Capacitor before speakers?

Yeah I was gonna say, if it's all on the same wire, it's a filter like you stated. If it were across both wires, I would have said AC/DC noise suppression.

Re: Capacitor before speakers?

Capacitors block low frequencies. Coils block high frequencies. Neither one do a very efficient job.
