5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

Hi all.

I did some searching and found that some people have installed 5 1/4" speakers in the stock 4x6 dash area. However nobody could produce pictures of the install. So does anybody have any pics of this setup? I would like to do 5 1/4" components in the dash and tweeters in the A pillar.

In case you are curious, I'm not interested in kickpanels or door mounted speakers becuase I don't like how they get in my foot space and I'm trying to keep the car looking stock.

Thanks,

John

Re: 5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

Hi all,

I did a little more research. I measured the mounting dept of the stock 4x6 bracket and it seems to be about 1.8". The mounting dept of the 4x6 Alpines that I have in there now are 1.75" and just fit. So the 5.25" Infinitys I am looking at have a mounting dept of 2.25". Interestingly the 6.5" Infinitys have a mounting depth of only 2" but with a bigger diameter magnet. So it looks like it would be easier to go with the 6.5". Modifying the 4x6 bracket to fit a 6.5 doesn't seem to hard. It would be easier with 5.25 speakers. So the question is, does anybody know how much higher i can mount the bracket without hitting the dashpad? Can I mount it 1/4" higher, or even 1/2" higher. I'm thinking of raising them up with washers.

Thanks

Re: 5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

on my 92 I have 5 1/4 in the dash but I had to make bracket out of 1/8 ABS plastic. First you use the stock bracket to make a base pattern then place your speaker on top to determine placement and sketch out the bracket then cut. I made custom plates for front and back but I found my 5.25 will hit the dash pad at full excursion so I placed some rubber washers under the dash for a little more clearance and to stop the damn squeaking.

I deleted the dash speakers because they were too bright and didn't give a real soundstage, my 2 cents.

I am aware of the limitations of dash mounted speakers but I think it will sound fine with properly positioned tweeters. And again I'm not willing to go door mounted or kick panels.

crytical point,

do you have any pics of this setup?

what is the mounting dept of your 5 1/4?

I do not have pics of my setup unfortunately.

But I used a basic Pyramid 2 way component set up and I think there mounting depth is at 2" because it was a tight fit so I used the heat gun to remold the plastic a little.

Ok thanks for your help. I ordered the 6.5" components with 2" mounting depth. I am going to try to modify the stock 4x6 bracket to fit the 6.5s. I will post up some pictures as I go.

Re: 5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

I considered using 6.5 in the dash but the coverage that the dash pad has over it was to much in my opinion. Though I am running the 5.25 with the tweeters mounted in the defrost vent and have them tuned for mid/high with no bass and the rears set the same and left all the bass for the pair of 10" subs and it sounds AWESOME.

Though my plans are to keep the speakers in the dash and add another amp to power a set of 6.5 3-way in the doors and in the hatch area. As long as I can leave it looking clean and almost factory I will be happy because that is the look I am going for. Anyways if I could accomplish making the speakers look stock then I will have 24 speakers in a Fbody with about 5000 watts to power them.

Re: 5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

Well here are some pics of the speakers mocked up. I enlarged the holes of the stock 4x6 mounts to accept the 6.5" speakers. The speaker on the driver side had to be lifted a little bit to clear the gauge cluster. The speaker on the passenger side had to be pushed a little to the front of the car due to the magnet getting in the way of the passenger 'glove box' area. The dash pad is going to be tight on these guys. I think I will have to jack it up with some washers or something else. Hopefully it won't look like crap. Will keep you guys updated. I also threw in a picture of my sail panel mock up.

The speakers are Infinity Reference 6020 6.5" components in all four locations. I haven't yet figured out where I'm going to mount the front tweeters. Probably either low on the A-pillar, or in the air vents, or in the doors.

Driver side.

Re: 5 1/4" Speakers in the dash

Hey, just wanted to give you guys an update. I have the passenger side 6.5" in its final spot now. I still need to find a way to get the driver side about 1/4" lower. I may have to cut away a small piece of instrument panel shield. Also I decided to the put the tweeters in the A-pillars. I got the drivers side one mounted. I'll have some more pics shortly.
