"My custom stereo".....I've seen tons of them
We know these threads, someone posts a link or picture to a "custom" stereo and it's one of those pre-fab'ed boxes with a amp screwed down in the middle of it. Old dingy carpet is still in the car and the box carpet is standard grade speckled trunk carpet.
What about you guys that take a lot of pride in your car and go the extra mile to make sure all the materials match (ie; carpet on the box matches interior carpet exactly) or even a custom vinyl covered speaker enclosure / amp rack that's hidden by a custom carpet??
How about custom kickpanels or door panels that have build-outs that match the interior colors almost perfectly? Not just a set of pre-colored q-forms and call it a day?
I mean I can do a search all day long on custom stereos and the stereo's may sound good but making sure it looks like it belongs in that particular car is more of an afterthought.
I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers, but I would like to see more cars that have stereos that look like they "belong" in the car and it looks like it could be something GM would have done, I hope that makes sense?

Aside from the aforementioned Q-forms in the kick panels, which I would like to something about, I like the way mine blends with the rest of the interior. Touch screen display on the head unit matches almost perfect with the digital gauges. In the rear is an enclosure for a singl2 12" Memphis MOJO and the amplifier for the entire system, a 5 channel Memphis Belle.
My head unit and digital dash with gauges for stereo amp voltage/current/temp under the center vents.

The heart of the system without its cover...

And with its cover (carpet covered perforated steel with a square tube steel frame)

Al Hasse, who makes those gauges? Also, on a scale of 1-10 how hard was the install (granted cutting into VSS ect.)?

Gauges are Dakota Digital. Install was pretty straight forward, a good schematic helps lots. Just find the correct wire on the harness to the original gauges and tap into that, then run it to the Dakota Digital microprocessor unit. Makes for alot of wires under the dash, especially if you already have an alarm system installed.

Al Hasse do you think you can post a picture of the t-tops strapped down in the back? I would just like to get an idea for the enclosure i want to build. Thanks

It doesn't look any different than having the stock hinged cover over the well

I ended up doing something like that, I may change the cover around a bit by making a custom mat to fit the whole area....that way the board isn't so obvious.

You can get carpet either with ACC or maybe a close match here.

Yeah I ordered their sample sheet. Will check it out.
I recall from a previous thread, Al's top cover was using acoustic carpet. I'm wondering where he got that.

I had mine installed, the carpet is the same stuff that the shop uses to cover custom boxes that they build, they get it in bulk. It's not much different than what 88TransAmFreak posted except maybe a little more "stretchy" to conform to some odd shapes.
