I am installing a kenwood radio into my 87 iroc. I wanted to know what the name of the kit was to install the radio with out the radio bulging out. i know there's one that is flush and doesn't push the radio out

Re: aftermarket radio kits
I purchased my kit from best buy, I don't see a part # on the package. It's called gm premium multi kit 1982-up, It comes with several mounting configurations including flush mount.

Re: aftermarket radio kits
i know that the metra's bulge out and im not looking for that. Also what do i need to do on a 87 camaro to mount it flush? i heard you have to cut the rear backing mount for the stock radio and do some trimming of the heater vents. But i want to know exactly what i need to do and what kit i can get and make it fit flush with the rest of the console.

Re: aftermarket radio kits
Not all the metra kits stick out, you just have to find the right one, that universal kit comes with a flush face, along with two others that stick out. All I did was take the metal bracket out, four 7mm screws hold it in. Then I just pulled on the console sides as I slide the radio in. I didn't need to trim or cut anything. But you should check out the HUmounts. They are really nice looking.
You can choose 82-92 kit when you order

Re: aftermarket radio kits
so your saying the universal kit that has almost all the GM brands on the back will have a flush mount setup in it? I did check out the HUmont kits and they are really nice but i dont really want to spend $65 for the kit. I need to get the car on the road first ahah

Re: aftermarket radio kits
Here you go
Item number: 330245149660
Schosche GM1500B
You will need to trim the rear mounting bracket in the radio pod housing, it's worth it because it makes a cleaner install.
I chose to use the supplied trim ring in the kit, or you can use the one that comes with the radio.

There you go. Thats a good price also. Just go to google if you really want a lower price. I trust buy.com for shipping/customer service/quality/price. Like said tho. You will need to cut away the bracing behind the radio. A dremel will do the trick. On firebirds you might have to cut into the air vents. I didnt want to do this. This is why my radio has the stick out type for now. I might buy this now that ive looked at one installed flush for the 10th time lol. Its wearing off on me.

Metra 99-4503
I think the metra kits look better than the scosche kits
I really don't like that trim ring on 88transamfreak's kit:
EDIT: Do you guys realize that (at least on Camaro's) the metal bracket is just mounted in with four 7mm screws? Just take it out, no need to spend all the effort of trimming/cutting it. And on Camaro's, if you just pull on the side of the console (grab it at the front of the console) as you slide the radio in, you won't have to mess with the vent ducting. I know my radio is pretty deep, somewhere in the 6 1/4 to 6 1/2 inches deep

my kit I got out of my buddys car, it slides, Flush or sticking out, but to make it that the radio goes in flush i had to take out that metal Plate thats for the stock radio. (dont cut it) it has 4 screws, just take it out.

Re: aftermarket radio kits
My Factory cassette is giving me trouble and i want to upgrade to cd.
Are there any aftermarket units that fill the full size of the factory hole for a nice neat look ? I've seen too many that have to be filled in with a plastic spacer/panel and it doen't look that great to me.

I opted for the HUMount kit as well last time around and it looked great. With the 4th gen dash, I'm going to modify the trim bezel to fit a double din (or touchscreen lcd for a carpc, we'll see how the funds look a year from now...)

Re: aftermarket radio kits
You other option would be to find a DIN 1/2 replacement from another GM vehicle with CD. I don't remember compatible models off the top of my head but I'm sure some of the guys here do.

Re: aftermarket radio kits
I know at least 98 and newer are din and 1/2. Bonnevilles and silverados all have them. If you get one out of a truck you might have to modify it some because those radios dont screw in they slide and snap in.
