What cap would I use to limit low end on dash speakers?
I've got 5.25 components in a kick panel, the tweater is obviously running off the supplied crossover. I also have 4x6 dash speakers, all running off the channel A of a PG Ryval 4 channel amp that is 2 ohm stable in stereo. I have the amp set to 100hz high pass, however I want to cut out way more bottom end to the 4x6 dash speakers. Is there a cap size you would recomend? I'd like to keep it in the mid to highend freq. There 2 way, but they look like there going to bounce right out of the dash at this point.
Thanks

umm, why dont you just install bass blockers on them instead? Its way easier and works incredibly well.

bassblockers are overpriced capacitors. just make sure they are non-polarized. a 400uf should cut off things below roughly 100hz. hope that helped

Thanks for the info, i'd like to get them cut off well above 100 hz. Strictly mid to high if I can

I never use bass blockers. I use Power Acoustik SPA-104 4" speakers, No bass comes threw any of my speakers. I had a few 400uf in another car that worked. When I had them in my camaro the capacitors just blew up

I think I'd like them up in the area of 500 hz. I want all the thump out of them. The 5.25 kick speakers have plenty of snap to them. I more or less want the dash speaker for a bit of fill, if I can get the volume down a little that would be great to.

Then I beleive you would want something around 50-60uf for that on a 4 ohm speaker.

I did a little bit of research into this and there is a lot of valuable information on www.the12volt.com . a 50 uf or mfd capacitor is good for blocking sounds below 800hz @ 4 ohms. The best thing to do is use the crossover calculator to figure out what is right for you depending on speaker ohms and what frequency you are looking for:

just scroll down to get to the calculator!

Those caps are polarized. Look for something non-polarized. That means it don't have a + and - side. 47uF would put you around 850Hz. Just remember that it's only going to be a 6db slop. Really more like a 3db (if your luck) slop considering the impedance of the speakers.

you can add caps in series to increase the impedance. IE 50uf will block below 800hz at 4ohm, 400hz at 2ohm, but if you run 2x 50uf you will block below 800hz at 2ohm.

Re: What cap would I use to limit low end on dash speakers?
I just used a 50 uf / mfd cap on some JL 4x6's and they cut out the bass nicely. I tested a 100uf/mfx cap and it wasnt enough to block, i was still getting bass distortion at medium volume levels. I would have liked something in the 60-75 uf range, but i would have had to run multiple caps to get that range.
