Replacing back seats with subs
Replacing back seats with subs
So I'm getting rid of my trashed back seats, and decided to put in 2 10s in their place with an amp in the middle. I was going to just attack it blind and see what I come up with, but I thought I'd ask the 3g nation first. I'm probably going to do all MDFboard for ease and cost, but I have worked with fiberglass before with fairly good results.
Basically, if you have any input, pictures, or ideas, speak now or forever hold my crappy box build. If not, I'll report back in a few millenia when it's all buttoned up...

My input.....
I wouldn't do it, it would be ghetto
especially for a pair of 10's.
Personally, have those seats recovered or purchase a set in better shape and put the 10's in the rear well.
You want a 2-seater with subwoofers behind you, buy a corvette, crx, or a ex-cab truck. Please don't do this to a thirdgen.

Re: Replacing back seats with subs
I use the rear for storage space, and I'm pushing my seats back to make room for my 6'3" tall goofy lookin self, plus a roll cage there's just no reason for the seats. I understand what you're saying, and partially agree, but it makes sense to scrap them and add the subs. The reason for 10's is sim-ply because I don't need 12s, hell, I don't even need 2, but one and an amp would take up too little room for such a big box...

I agree I wouldnt do it, I would also just recover the eats even if you dont use them to have anyone sit in them they are there for looks and it looks good. Use the back seat for storage and put the subs in the well. Or do a custom set up with only one sub in the well so you have room for storage. You can do a lot with that space just got to utilize it well. I went with a custom made MDF box to that took up the whole well and prolly will change it to take up the whole hatch space!
Re: Replacing back seats with subs
granted, it's maybe not the best or traditional look, but I'm not blaring the Oak ridge Boys and drinking natty light wiht my ****** and wife beater on. there are worse images for a third gen than taking the seats out. Not customary, but there's worse sins in this life. I'm doing it, I'm just looking to see if anyone has done something before that can inspire an idea or two, which are hard to come by after a long day of work...
edit... the asterisks are for a certain hair do which I guess is not to be named around firebird folk.

Re: Replacing back seats with subs
i'm in the process of doing the same thing. rear seats are coming out forever. i'm putting a single 10" sub in the middle with storage on both sides. i'm 6-6 and tired of feeling cramped, so front seats are moving back a couple of inches also. if you guys don't like the idea, i don't suggest doing it to your car. however, it's happening in my car irregardless of any naysayers.

It all depends on how it looks when its done to say if its ghetto or not? The back seats on a third gen are pointless. But you can still squeeze some folks in there! Get a really nice custom box and make sure it matches your interior. That should do the trick. Then post some pics dude!

Re: Replacing back seats with subs
I had done an amp enclosure in the back of the seats on my last car to keep some room in the hatch area (along with hiding stuff from potential thieves). As for subs, if you're good with fiberglassing, you could probably keep the enclosure pretty low and not make it much of an eyesore. You could build a shelf of sorts where the lower sections were with the sub on one side and the amp on the other.
