Custom sub box for two DD 1508 - Dont get too excited, not being built yet
SubscribeOk so im have two Digital Designs 1508 8" subs on the way to me. Might even be here tomorrow, if not early next week ill have them. And im planning to do a custom well box like you see people doing with the third gens. But i dont see many people on the site porting their boxes? None that i saw so far. Well mine is going to be slot ported. Im still trying to design/figure out how in the h*ll this is going to work out. The problem is each sub needs like .9 cubes, which i can get, but after sub and port displacement its not going to be quite that much. So working on that right now.
I know most are making a slot or whatever on there to clear the plastic panel that sticks out. Im thinking im not going to do that unless i absolutely have to. I have two panels, dont mind cutting one up so i wont have to smash the box around that, just cut the bottom of the panel off and put the panel on after the box is in, sounds like it should work. I will check into that some more tho.
Ok here are pics, first i was planning to do the box like this and just make the top baffle more of a trim piece as shown.. Til i figured out it wouldnt be big enough for the subs.

So now im trying to get max volume out of the space i have by doing like so..

Anyways just showing what im going to do. Dont expect anything real nice. Cuz my car is not very nice. But i will be posting pics of actual progress once i get the subs, and some mdf so i can start building. But, still need to figure out exactly how im going to do the box, as far as volume and stuff.

I got my subs in today. Wow they look so tiny! But the magnet is huge on them. Here are some pics of the little beasts. Theyre rated at 500 RMS a piece, but i have read that a few people have thrown considerably more at them with ease and no problems. They are DVC 4 ohm, so im planning to either get a big 2 channal and run it at 2 ohms per channel/sub. Or most likely a mono block capable of doing 1 ohm, and over 1000 RMS.

No one interested in this? I suppose i havent really started any build yet. And im also guessing there are not a ton of car audio guys here, or into DD subs..
Either way, i got them in this crappy box to test them out. Theyre running off a 2 channel rockford amp with 125 rms to each, which is way underpowering these things. The box is slot ported and tuned to 40hz, and they are loud as hell.. I cant wait to put a real amp on them and see how loud they can get.
Also, i am back to the original design where its just going to be a regular rectangular shaped box, and i might still put the top baffle as a trim piece to cover the rest of the space in the well area to make it look kinda nice. I still got to get some mdf, then im going to build my box.

you would probably be better off using aero ports rather than having to deal with the difficulty of making a slot port sound good with the odd enclosure..
Do you happen to know how hard it would be to make a custom box for 3 12 that i have

Its not really all that odd. Im pretty sure i decided i am just going to make a normal rectangle shaped box, and the top baffle will also be a trim piece to cover the open space. I already have them in a really crappy little slot ported box i threw together, tuned to 40hz and they are loud and way underpowered. So im going to stick to a box real similar to the one theyre in right now since they get loud in it.Originally Posted by MikeSmith0890

But, i have two 3" areo ports, theyre already glued together from another box tho so theyre like 12" long i think, i dont know how that would sound or what itd tune it to. It might be worth a shot to see how it sounds too.

Three 12s? Not easy man. You more than likely will not get 3 12s in the back of one of these cars.. I was trying to build a box for two 12" kicker cvrs and there just isnt enough space for the subs.. You might be able to get enough space for one 12 but thats about it. The space is pretty limited back there.Originally Posted by JR350tpi

you can do 3 10's for certain, and I believe 3 12's also. Back in 92, JL Audio used to have a drop in fiberglass housing that held 3 and possibly 4 subs. They sat in kind of a W facing upward. The air space is there, it's just a matter of making the most of it. Have you considered putting your slot between your subs? I used to have a custom dual bandpass setup in my trunk: panel down low into the trunk with the subs mounted on it, firing up into the top chamber, which had he amps and power distro built into it. We used a big 6" diam pvc pipe for the port firing up through the middle of all that. The way we stealthed it, everything was carpeted over, and all you seen was the speaker grill that covered the port.
So for 2 there would be space i have the PUNCH P2 subs.

You ca fit 2 12s back there, just about any brand with the airspace they need, even ported. 15s are bit harder and can require alot more airspace for a ported enclosure but can be done. Any 12" or 15" (even a pair) sub sealed should fit if you can design your own box.
Ive had 2 12s sealed, 2 10s sealed, 2 12s ported, and 2 15s ported, just gotta build a very good box and more often than not use fiberglass to get the most airspace possible. But it can be done.

Would you make me one or tell me how much are they around
