Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

First off, I have a later model Delco TheftLock head unit from a 2002 GMC/Chevy truck which looks almost stock when installed. It has a CD changer output and I wanted to use that for playing any other type of audio I so choose. Later it will be for a satellite receiver.

From Precision Interface Electronics (PIE), I bought the GM9-AUX which plugs into the 9-pin CD changer socket on the back of the radio, this emulates a CD changer and makes the radio think it has one connected.

It took all of 5 minutes for me to rack out the head unit, plug the harness in and route the other end to the side of the console. I haven't decided yet if it will remain there.

Now with everything hooked up, I select the CD/AUX button on the radio until CD 1, Track 1 is displayed, then I can listen to whatever I can hook up with a set of RCA cables. Here, I have my phone playing MP3 tracks I have stored on it.

PIE is very particular on which model years (and which vehicles they're from) will work with this piece. Mine happened to be one that does.

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

I've got almost the exact same deck going into my 87 TA. Pulled it out of my 97 GTP before it got sold. Nice upgrade from the old cassette decks. Would probably pick up one of these as well so I can toss my mp3 player in the car

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

Very nice set up! I'm looking to install the same head unit in my 91 RS Vert. Do I need any additional items besides the new head unit?

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

Just make sure the head unit is capable of controlling a stock external CD changer. I contacted PIE to make sure the interface would work with my head unit before I actually ordered the piece. As far as hookup, just plug it into the back of the radio, couldn't be easier.

Thanks. I'm also looking into getting the same head unit as yours and I wanted to know if I needed any extras to install such as brackets and such.

That depends on the model car/truck it came out of. Direct fit from a 4th gen.

Back with update...

I finally got the auxiliary input I wanted. Santa was good to me and I now have a SIRIUS Sportster V Satellite receiver. I moved the GM9-AUX behind the radio and spliced a cigarette lighter socket into the key-on 12V source behind the radio (cigarette lighter plug has to be used, it has a 12V-5V step-down transformer in it). I mounted the receiver on top of the radio pod temporarily using velcro, a more permanent mount will come later, but location will be the same.

Here's how it came out...

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

I picked up a refurbished Delco Theftlock Monsoon radio pulled from a 4th Gen. I installed it over the weekend but it was a very tight fit and I couldn't fit the PIE adaptor. I'm thinking I'm going to have to make some minor adjustments to the back bracket but I'll tackle that issue later on. I'm just satisfied to have a cd player that looks stock in the car. I'll try to post some picks later on.

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

I am also looking to do this set up. Did the speaker plugs and power plug simply plug right into this newer delco unit; or did you have to modify the harnesses ? Also, do you know what year 4th gen that came out of or does it even matter?

From the top post, the auxiliary adapter is plugged into the CD changer port on the back of the Delco unit. To do this though, you need to be sure your Delco head unit will control a CD changer. Auxiliary audio plugs into the RCA jacks on the adapter, power is whatever the IPOD/Satellite/MP3 requires, most likely cigarette lighter, but use your imagination

Almost any deck with the 9-pin auxiliary (slave unit/CD changer) jack on the back side will work, mine came from a 2002 GMC/Chevy truck.

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

Yes, the speaker plugs and power plugs go right in. I didn't need anything extra to make this work. The Monsoon head unit I have was manufactured in 2000. Like I said earlier, the only problem I had was that the newer head unit is a bit bigger than the original stock unit I previous had. This weekend I'm going to try and see if I can make a few adjustments so that I can fit the PIE adaptor.

Re: Auxiliary audio to delco head unit

Thanks for the info guys ! Im definately going to try to find one of those newer Delcos asap. Probably going to hold off on the PIE adapter for now ($ funds, lack of) but headed to craigslist and the junkyards for the radio. I really appreciate all of the help. Yo Guch, let me know how it goes this weekend. Good Luck !

Couldn't tell you. Bought it used from a car audio shop. We removed the bottom cover with slide mounts attached, and replaced it with another without mounts. After replacing the cover, some angle stock aluminum was used to fabricate front mounting brackets. I have a picture posted with the bezel removed that shows my brackets, small screws, with lock-tite, were used to attach them to side of the faceplate.
