Custom Sub Box Builds 1,2, and 3

My system is 2 x Blaupunkt 300w RMS 600w MAX 12” subs and a Pioneer 760w amp that I picked up off craigslist for dirt cheap. This is my first real experience with woofers ever.

My first ever subwoofer attempt was a free Box, but it caused too many rattles despite decent sound.

I then decided to go sealed. So, I measured my trunk, and figured it out as I went along. It kicked pretty hard, and I stayed with it for about 5 months. It was MDF filled with cotton stuffing for the lack of volume.

Then comes the real fun. I got bored one day, and decided to teach myself fiberglass, as I had never touched it before. I picked up a few online tutorials and went at it.
Lined my trunk and laid down some fabric. Then applied generous amounts of resin:

Made a hollow shell for the bottom

cut out ¾ MDF for the top, and rings

mounted rings and test-fit subs

started clothing the top

First layer resined.

Cut off overhang and glassed the top to the bottom (such a pain to fit)

used an impact sander around the entire thing

Bondo!

Re: Custom Sub Box Builds 1,2, and 3

Bondo sanded, putty applied, sanded again, and drilled holes and mounted the mounting posts for the amp.

Done!

I can’t show what it looks like in the trunk since its too dark for a picture, but it fits perfectly snug. In total I spent close to $200 in materials including a whole bottom shell that was trashed as a learning mistake. It took a lot of weekends to finish, but I am glad it is done, and it sounds amazing. I am waiting on LED’s I ordered to mount beneath the amp to glow outwards and illuminate the box.

It slows down the waves and is used to help a box that is too small. This is what the internet told me, and it worked.

thats awesome i plan on doing that one day but i want to do a half box so its just one side of the trunk i built one outta mdf for now but fiberglass would be awesome also idk how true it is but i heard that mounting your amp to the box is bad? they said it was because of the vibrations from the sub can ruin the amp good work though

Very nice work, I've never done fiberglass before, but you've made me want to try.

Man I cant believe how well this thing turned out. For two idiots that haven't ever messed with fiber glass before, I say we did an amazing job Now you just got to figure out something about the amp.

Looks awesome man! I built my "big" setup out of MDF and made a leather cover to go over the entire hatch area. I'd love to see how it looks in your car!

Nice job on the glassing. Definitely not for the faint of heart or a quick job, but very impressive when you're done

From the size and MDF used I would probably say around 50 lbs.

Very nice build!

The recessed rings look great. I assume you also used tee nuts on the rings? Have you decided where you are going to drill to the run the wires inside to the subs?

That looks very good. Its nice seeing people who actually take the time to do a good job on something rather than just stuffing everything together because its faster.
