I really don't care about high quality audio systems, I listen to mostly 80's music, trunk rattling subs isn't really what I am shooting for. I'm just looking for a good setup for $250 or less. I went to Walmart and they have a black Pioneer sub for like $60 or $70, it's a 10", I'm pretty sure it was rated at 1,000 watts. They also had a 12" Sony Xplod sub there, 1200 watts. I'm not sure what to go with. It needs to fit in the deep part of my trunk with the box, that's all I care about. I don't know for sure what amp I should go with though, all of them were 600 watt amps, but I don't know how well that would power a 10" or 12" sub. I want enough base to have my music sound good, but if I decide I want to listen to rap sometime, enough base to make things rattle a little bit lol.

Any word on how good these subs are? Anyone have them? How much base does my Thirdgen RS need to have a decent sound?

 

To be honest bro, you don't really need a lot of power to get a thumping sound. It's all about the box and the amp. I have three tens on a sealed box with less than 1000W (RMS) and it is still able to jump my hair around where as the system in my sister's honda (1 15" with 2400rms) you hear thumping down the street.

Be sure to match the box and amp to the sub you buy, think of it like an engine; everything is predicated on each other. 600w RMS will keep you satisfied and is relatively easy as a beginner.

As far as build quality of the merchandise, Sony aren't bad in my book. By no means am I calling them the best but you aren't building a competition system either. One piece to think about is to find as amp that has a remote control for the amp so you can turn the gain down quickly if you hear distortion.

Awesome, I was thinking just a 12" Xplod, a 600 watt Sony amp, and a regular box. I'll probably just buy it all from Walmart lol. Like I said, I really don't care that much, if I blow anything out, a new sub is just another $70 lol. Verses those subs that are like $300 lol I'd hate to replace those often! I will have a privacy thing in the back anyway, it will sound fine and no one will know how cheap my stuff is. And if they do and steal it, it's not that big of a deal. I am in Madison, Wisconsin most days, my car just parked in a parking lot, people steal stuff all the time. I'll have a stock GM cassette head unit, cheap Sony speakers and a cheap setup in the back. I like my cheap Sony stuff, to me it sounds just as good or better than the stuff that costs thousands to buy.

 

I prefer the superior sound quality of Pioneer as opposed to Sony, but that's just my personal opinion.

Walmarts not that bad I acutaly got my 2 10" Pioneer sub there on the clearence shelf. $80 for both, great price over 50% off and had no problem, they where just trying to make space for new stuff. I also used their amp kit tho I got the biggest one that my amp accepted and got a large battery cable for the ground (the ground in the kit is short and small). Had to get a longer terminal for my battery (pain in the *** to install). Over all my subs sound sweet. Just make sure you tighten your spoiler down.

 

Are you going to buy the sub box there too? If so I would go with the 10 inch sub instead of the 12 because the box for the 12 will barely fit in the well(I tried it before). You have a better chance of it fitting with the 10. That is if all walmarts carry the same sub boxes.

If you have to go to Walmart I'd take the Pioneer....had one in my DD and was quite happy. However...the DCON is heads above a walmart sub....TRULY!

 

if you dont want huge blast, get 2-6" for the dash, 2-6x9's for the back, (roughly about 50$ after taxes) now take 100 and get a decent head unit. now take 60$ and go to a pawn shop and haggle them for 2-12's and a 600watt amp. take the remaining money, go back to walmart, put it on a gift card, and send it to me XD lol jk use it for gas to feed your beast. p.s. PAWN SHOPS WILL BARGAIN just dont take more then 60$ with you in the store. trust me theyll make the deal. its how i got my 2-12" mTx's and 600 wat sub
