what is my problem?

well this is 2 questions, 1st i have a stock head unit in (freind gave to me from his 92 camaro) he said it worked fine in his but for me i dont have rear speaker sound. now on the back onthe head unit theres 4 plugs, i only have 3. am i missing one? is this the right head unit? also the plugs are specfic, no chance in mixing them up, and also i now the rear speakers work bc i tested them.
2nd is whats the deal with my fronts? they work fine and everything but the mounting bracket on the speaker is no where near the mounting holes on the dash. soooo is there a plate im missing? or what is going on there?
thx for any and all help.

i was thinking that but heres the catch, the harness from what i can see doesnt look like 1 bit of its been touched, there no unconnected wires, no chopped wires, i mean it looks like nothing has been touched. on a side note i have this adaptor that came with the car where the 3 plugs i do have plug into it (adaptor is to plug in an aftermarket headunit) but theres no room for the 4th plug.

Re: what is my problem?

It's normal to have only 3 sections of that plug. The two 4-pin sections are for your speakers, the other 6 pin section is for power, lighting, memory, etc. The unused 6-pin section is normally for data interface and inputs for SCV (speed controlled volume), steering wheel controls.

I found a picture that shows the pin-outs of the 20-pin harness that should be for that radio.

Are you sure the rear speakers are hooked up?

If you have a multimeter, you can put it across the wires you should see either 4 or 8 ohms depending on what you have there

If you don't have a meter, you can take a 9volt batter and tap the speaker leads (don't do this with it hooked to the head unit) and the speakers should make a slight popping noise.

If you see the right ohms, or hear the noise then you know the speakers are hooked up and appear to be working. If nothing, then check behind the speaker to make sure it's hooked up if yes. Then check the wires, maybe they are cut somewhere.

Re: what is my problem?

well i put the speakers in so i now they are hooked up...but i might try that 9 volt idea, just to see if there is a cut in the wires. umm so how do i do that? i wana make...i unhook the rear speaker plug from the head unit, some how hook the +/- wires to the +/- ends on the battery and if the wires are good and everything hooked up i should hear a poping nise?

Exactly. You can also check the polarity of the speakers. Wired correctly, when you touch the wires to the battery, the cones should move or push out, assuming you connect pos to pos and neg to neg. Of course you have to have the grilles or sail panels removed to see this.

Re: what is my problem?

have you found the wires that are supposed to be the rear speakers coming from the radio?

better yet, go back into the sail panels, pull one of the speakers, and get the wire colors you connected to. go back to the deck and verify that those wires are in one of the deck harnesses. or, even better:

find the wires that are supposted to be the rear channels like i said above, get any of your car speakers and connect them to those wires (you will have to cut them) directly. attach a safe extension lead if you cannot get in that close. hear the speaker work, to rule out the radio being the problem, then run your own wires to both back speakers. ya it seems like a big job, but if you know how to pull the raido out you can figure this out.

stupid question: you checked your fade controls on the radio?

Re: what is my problem?

p.s. i would not connect anyting other than a speaker signal wire to the speaker if you care about the quality of the speaker when you're finished. when i was in stereo school, thats what we did to learn about the internals of the speakers (by blowing them out of their cages)

but do what you want. its cool to watch

Re: what is my problem?

lol yes i checked the fade controls and they work correctly from wut i can tell. i havent messed wit it yet its been a little cold out. but i thought of something, the wires are put on wrong. ofcourse the speaker are side specifc but one of the p.o. could of spliced the wires in wrong and ya so im gona check that, then do the battery tesy and go from there.
