Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

91 Camaro
Planning on changing my front speakers under the dashpad. My Hayne's manual says to deactivate the airbag. Do I really need to do this when taking off the dashpad and replacing the speakers? Thanks for any info guys.

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

you shouldn't be coming anywhere near the airbag wiring, so you shouldn't have to. i think they are saying that mainly because when working on electrical stuff, you should be disconnecting the battery and you don't want it to potentially (very rare) go off when the battery is reconnected.

you should be ok without touching either the battery or the airbag if you're just doing speakers.

Thanks for the responses. The Hayne's manual would make it more difficult. I suppose they do that as some sort of legal disclaimer w/all electrical work on the car.

You should be fine as long as you disconnect the battery. The airbag is nowhere near where your going to be working but it never hurts to be cautious. Last thing you would want is an airbag whacking you in the face while working on your car.

Can someone tell me the size of the speakers under the dash? I want to replace them but havent had a chance to look yet. I am rebuilding my car. Also, what is the typical speaker size for doors? I also want to install speakers there.

Dash speakers are 4x6 stock - think some have figured a way to do 5 1/4 round in there, but not sure how - you can search dash speakers and see if there's info on this.

I've got to see this... Should be easy retrofitting the dash parts without the windshield in the way and having plenty of room in the garage.

I've been thinking about 6.5" Eclipse components for quite a while now.

you post this after i put the dash back in LOL, anyways yeah the windsheild is a pain to work around but all i really had to do was i used a dremal and cut out the fins near the speakers and they just sat right in, i could only get one bolt in the speaker to hold it down but it works great and they sound great, iv got sony explode's in.

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

I'm running their Xplod XS-W4621 4x6 speakers right now and I can't stand the tweeters in the things. Heck, I haven't found a 4x6 with a decent tweeter I can stand yet with the soundstage the way it is with the angle of the windshield, and the lack of bass response from the oval 4x6 midrange/woofer. I have sensitive ears... (Yes, even with my loud exhaust leaks and countless hours of hammering, chiselling, grinding, welding,, etc)

Haven't really been on the computer all day. Just saw this thread. Actually, I've been thinking of the Eclipse 6.5" point-source speakers with the tweeters that are removable.

Sounds good. Maybe once I get all of the PO's ghetto-rigged body work done right I'll be able to afford to swap out the sound stuff for better stuff (minus the headunit... that stays). I needed to get the harness out anyways so I could install the wiring for the second amp for the main speakers (separate one for the subs). I've also been planning on components in the sail panels, but that all depends on the money situation when all is said and done...

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

4-year old Eclipse CD-5435 HU, 50Wx4, with 5V front, rear, and non fader preouts and the Eclipse iPC-106 iPod controller (for which I need a new iPod interface cable). I used to have an Eclipse CD-3402 in my car not long after I graduated, but that was the only thing I never got back from my break in when I was living in Ohio. Between the HU and my cheap subs, pushing air through all of my cracks, holes, and leaky weatherstripping (other than not quite being tuned right), I can hit around 130 dB...

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

I run the Distinct (cheaper brand of Crossfire) PP12 12" DVC subs with matching TD-702 700W amp. Should put some of my polyfill in the box, but I need a new box... The box was a prefab that the carpet was starting to pull away on and the water leak in the pass side hasn't helped.

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

Those Xplods won't handle 1100 watts... I had a pair, and they ran just about at peak with my 340W Jensen amp (the one I'm going to hook up to the main speakers). You don't want to look at the peak numbers, but the RMS. My subs and amp are matched at 340W RMS. My speakers on the other hand, are a little weak for the HU's amplifier, the 4x6s handling only 20W RMS (supposedly, anyways).

If you go Pioneer (or was it JVC), for the headunit, DON'T use the SuperBass option... The shop that did the work on mine described a number of guys who came in because the HU fried their speakers when SuperBass was turned on.

Re: Replacing speakers under dashpad. Need to deactivate airbag?

I wouldn't use either, personally, but the Sony's are probably better than the Pioneers. If there's a shop near you that sells them, I would look at Memphis. I've heard those at sound offs and those things POUND when set up right. They're expensive, however. Or the Orion brand, I think, is halfway decent, not sure. Crossfire I know is good.
