sub placement
i really want to drop subs into my 82 z, but i was wondering if there was any way i could install them behind the back seats? the fold down but i didnt know if its a good idea to put any back there or how to do it. thanks a lot
Re: sub placement
I've had my subwoofers in the backseat area and they sound alright. You would probably want to get some shelving brackets and screw them into your subwoofer box and folded down back seat for security. However, I've found that my subs sound much MUCH louder when I have them in the well behind the fuel tank directly underneath the hatch. I don't quite understand it, but I think it's because the sound waves have nowhere to go but forward, so you aren't losing much sound. You can get a box that fits in that area for around $85 shipped.

Re: sub placement
I hope your not talking about the bump behind the seat, drilling into that will make the gas tank go boom

Re: sub placement
There isn't enough room to put them behind the back seats. The fuel tank is located near that location. When people do a fuel door hack they cut into the center section of the hump between the back seats and the well and that's exactly where the in-tank fuel pump is. Also the upper corners of that slope is where the rear shocks mount. The hatch well or driverside hatch trim (only thing thing that is there is the cardboard glovebox) is good place for them though. The hatch glass redirects the sound very well and the weight very close to the rear axle which helps out with traction some.
What sub brand and size are you looking into getting? Have you thought about amps yet?

Re: sub placement
depending on how good you are with tools and fiberglass, you can use the hatch well area (most common), the spare tire spot, or in the sail panels (really small subs thought).
some people also remove the rear seat and place them there, but thats a bit too close to the back of the seats for my taste.
by placing the subs in the hatch firing up, you're giving the sub frequencies more time to develop before they hit your ears; low frequency waves are very long and can use all the space they can get

Re: sub placement
You have four choices.
1. Remove rear seats and build a sub box. (your car now becomes a two seater)
2. 8" or 10" subs in the sail panel (see pic below). You can use shallow mount subs (the Pioneer got some good reviews)
3. Mount 6.5" sub on top of the gas tank (see link)
4. Subs in the rear hatch area. Either in the rear or inplace of the spare tire or remove the glove box.
Choice is yours........

Re: sub placement
This is what I did too--single sub in the well and it sounds awesome!! More bass than I need and I can still store the T-Tops back there!
