missing speakers

Hey guys, got a 1990 iroc, and today when I took off the sail panels, there were no speakers underneath them...

All the mounts are still there, and the wires were just down at the bottom of the well. Would the wires touching the metal in the well have caused any damage?

In the driverside well, there was the 2 speaker wires, plus some other wite with a connector on it. What is that from?

And last but not least, where could i get some cheap factory speakers?

Thanks guys!

Sail panel speakers are 6x9 - your choice on brand.

Re: missing speakers

I got a set of kenwood 400watt 6x9 3 ways off of ebay brand new in the box for 55.00. As for the wires, it souldnt cause a problem unless they were bare and touching metal when you turned on the radio, that is if you did. Even then I wouldnt think anything happened. You could always hook up temporary speakers to it and see. And as for the white connector, I dont know.

Re: missing speakers

white connector could be a frequency blocker or something like that, would have to see a picture of it.

Re: missing speakers

Sorry guys, was in a hurry when I wrote the post to go to the cottage. The connector wasnt white its one has blue and one half black.

Does the Ohm rating on the speakers matter?

And yes the radio was turned on with the speaker leads touching metal, but the rear speakers still kicked in and sounded fine, if that makes a difference.

thanks

Yes the ohm rating does matter, a typical car speaker is 4ohms, that number is based on the average watts of a car stereo. However when you go to a heavy bass system with an amp, the amp and the sub will rate different as will the size of wire used to hook the sub up. Now some stereos have a auto cut off if a speaker is bad or there is a fault in the speaker wires it keeps the stereo from burning up, my kenwood does this(not anymore I replaced all the speaker wire). So depending on what you want to do,the best bet would be to replace all of the speaker wire (front and rear) when and if you change to a different stereo and speaker set up.
I hope this answers your question.

Re: missing speakers

I'll assume that this is just a regular head unit your connecting the speakers to and not an external amp. The ohm rating does matter, too low and you burn up your head unit, to high and your speakers dont get the power they should. But I really dont think there are that many 6x9's that are anything other than 4 ohm. So pick a nice pair of 6x9's rated at 4 ohms and your good to go

And replacing the speaker wire is never a bad idea seeing as how it gets old and chewed up over the years, its a little tricky to run some of it but worth the time in my opinion

Re: missing speakers

I know that on many stock GM head units if the speaker leads touch the body and the unit is turned on, it can damage the output transistors. If you could locate new transistors you may be able to repair it though.

Yes sir it can be a PITA but very much worth it. Plus some places wont warranty the install if you dont replace it. At least thats what I have heard. Some people just dont want to deal with an install.

Thanks guys!

If thats the case you can get car speakers all day long from 50 bucks to as much as you want to spend. Good luck.

Re: missing speakers

The Delco-Bose stereo doesn't use speakers behind the sail panels, or speakers in the dash. It uses speakers in the kick panels, and in the cargo well. Generally speaking, it is it's own animal. Changing the head unit or the speakers typically requires adapters or replacing everything. By modern standards, the 80's Delco-Bose system is antiquated and obsolete anyway. Entry level stuff from Walmart would be easier to deal with and sound better then trying to adapt anything into the Bose system.

Really? I had no idea...always thought that the speakers in the rear area were owner modifications only.

Re: missing speakers

Thanks drew, you just saved me about $50 and an angry email to the PO who said all the speakers were there! Why are there wires still in the wells for speakers then? And there are still speaker mounts that look as if they are used and have had speakers in them before... One of them is even a new wooden one.

Re: missing speakers

I would bet that someone had an extra amp wired up somewhere and then added the two speakers to the sails, hence the odd colored wiring. Probably stripped it all out when they sold the car to you.

Re: missing speakers

Looks like you are right Joe, once I lifted the carpet up, the wires just ended randomly and were cut off.

Re: missing speakers

Joe, I only get sound coming from the speakers in the cargo area. Where are these other speakers located exactly?
