Bose question

Hey! Im swedish so will try to explain this the best i can in english.

I got a bose system in my iroc 87 and want to replace some of it. Have read almost everything about bose here but didnt find a answer.

Want to replace my headunit with my newer DIN(?) one, put in my small sub with amp, install the two small twitters(?) and use the stock bose kicker speakers as mid's.
Dont want to destroy the kicker panel by putting in other mids so thinking if i take apart the bose speaker plastic tunnel thing and disconnect the amps for those speakers, connect them to my other amp wich have twitters and mids out and use them as mid's.
Will not use the rear speakers at all.

Anyone tried that?

Or will it still be a problem because of what i understand the bose speakers have lower ohm?

Re: Bose question

I wouldn't recommend using the stock Bose speakers in the kick panels. They're already 23+ years old and pretty flimsy. I pulled mine out and replaced them with a set of 4 inch speakers but I had to make some room (cut away some plastic) in the kick panel for the newer speakers to fit. The stock speakers are pretty slim.

I tested mine once I had the kick panels apart (amp disconnected) and they didn't sound so well with the newer style head unit.

Re: Bose question

Thats true they are pretty old, but the car only has about 3800miles on its neck so they cant have been used that much, if that would do any difference.

Yeah they must be really slim! Dont know if my 4inch speakers would even fit if i cut away some plastic.
Do you have some extra slim ones?
Are yours visible or are they behind the "fluff"?

Would be sad to cut the hole panel open cause there aint so easy to get those kind of parts here. And i want to keep the car as original as possible visually.
But you cant have it all hehe.

Re: Bose question

Mine are mounted inside the kick panels and the panels are covered with carpet.

Try your old ones and see how they sound.

Re: Bose question

I Started with a Bose and none of the speakers played. I had the two speakers in the back deck and the two small kick panels speakers. I retained my head unit and bought a pair if front Cadillac STS speaker/amps and a set of the 6 X 9's I clipped the plugs off my little rear speakers and connecteted my wiring to the corresponding wires on the caddy 6 X 9. I went from the little 25 watt speaker/amp combo to a pillar mounted 100 watt caddy speaker/amp combo. It worked perfectly. Next I took my speaker/amps out of the kick panels and installed the Caddy front speaker/amp combos in the same camaro housing. I did have to cut the housing because it was thicker than the Camaro stucff. I reglued the carpet back on and you can't tell. I changed the plugs out just like I did on ther rear speakers and now I have a 400 watt Caddy bose speaker set up in my Iroc. It sounds Great! There is no information on how to do this but I just figured it out on my own. It was really very simple. The nice part is the Caddy speakers are 9 years newer and they cam from a car where no one had really blasted the stereo so they were were in Great shape.
I hope this helps a little.

Re: Bose question

The problem with running an aftermarket head on Bose speakers is that the Bose speakers are externally amplified. You can buy a caonverter to adapt your new head unit to the Bose speakers but to be honest, you'll be happier if you take the time to replace the Bose.

Re: Bose question

Bose speakers are weird black magic things, and pretty much only work well with Bose components. You can get good sounding speakers, fairly cheaply, which will work far better with a non-Bose amp than the Bose speakers ever will.

Re: Bose question

Haha yea they are really weird!

I ran a wire from the speakers directly to the crossovers mid out take, so i dont have the inbuilt amplifiers connected and uses the speakers only as mid's.

It sounds pretty good but as you all say, it will be much better with newer speakers.

But better than nothing until i find some new good small ones to fit in there.

Artisan: That was an intresting way of doing it. The problem is that i dont think i ever seen a cadillac sts over here, so could be a problem finding those speakers.

Thanks for the answers everyone!

Re: Bose question

I hadn't considered the problem of finding a Cadillac over there. You could find them on EBay other wise they might be cost prohibitive. Good luck with it!
