Re: best speaker sizes
You can fit 5.25" in the dash. Just cut( modify the factory metal housing and make sure the speaker is 1 7/8" deep or less.
You can also cut a hold in the speaker area of the dashpad and mount a 6.5" speaker from the top (the speaker will now sit on top of the dash pad). Just remember that your dash pad now has a permanent hole in it.
I personally run GBL GTO 4x6 in the dash of my 87 TA and they sound great.

Re: best speaker sizes
i opted to go for some 6 1/2" components in the kick panels; night and day difference from the original 4x6's, but will cost a few more bucks to do.
as noted by others, you can get some 5 1/4s to work with a bit of creative modding (cutting)

I went with rerouting the front speaker wires to the door panels and installing 6 1/2" Pioneer TS-G671M "4" way to complement the 6x9 Pioneer TS-A6947 "2" way in the rear and could not be happier.

Re: best speaker sizes
I got components in my doors and they sound amazing. They are older model made in Germany Mb-quart's and I'm also running Mb-quarts in the sail panels and I have all of it hooked up to a Kenwood amp. It gets LOUD and is very clear. I have the tweeters up where the door switches would go.
