Front speakers that will fit an 87 Trans Am
I need some help.
I picked up some JBL GTO 4x6 speakers thinking they would drop right in and they are too big for the front dash on my 87 TA. The magnet is too big.
Seems the speaker openings are different on Camaro's and Trans Am's due to the top of the dash being a different shape (on mine anyway)
Can you guys provide make and model numbers for 4x6 speakers you have in your Trans Am's.
Thanks

the passengsride is not too bad, but fitting anything in the driverside is tough. I had to rework the dash duct work to fit speakers in both my birds on that side.

Whatever Pioneer 4x6 speakers that I bought at walmart a year and a half ago fit perfectly in an 85. Dont have the model number though since I sold the car and the box went with it. I think they were two-way, the price was $42. Receipt has 001256287451 as the upc. All pioneers that I've seen have had smaller than stock magnets.

Have you tried custom fitting it into your door even when the magnet is too big? How much bigger is the magnet compared to the cutout?

I prefer to keep the speakers in the dash as I'm only keeping the car for a year or two.

Well then have a look at those pioneers. Probably the 3-ways would be best

I ended up going with up some Aura home drivers (3.5") and a set of Pioneer tweeters. I fabbed up a plate, cut some wire and reconnected everything.
These things really shine.

Mine has Infinity, they were already in the car when bought it but they seem pull out and drop in easily.

Simply wired the positive and negative wires together and attach to the speaker wires from the deck. Essentially turning/wiring two speakers into one.
They ran of the deck's front channels no prob.
The tweets do not have a lot of resistance so the deck is not overloaded.
The Aura's were cheap and decent sounding. www.madisound.com offers some good bargains.

Re: Front speakers that will fit an 87 Trans Am
My cones were old and wanted newer speakers but wanted to stay very stock but improve the sound since it sounded kinda muddled. I owned a TA back in the day and knew the stock head unit could sound better. it was the age of a paper cone. they were in good shape mind you... So I bought the following off Amazon and bought connector/adaptors from crutchfield so I didnt have to splice anything
Pioneer TS-A6964R A-Series 6"x9" 3-Way 400 Watts
$49.95
Pioneer TS-A4674R A-Series 4"x6" 3-Way 200 Watts
$47.99
they sound better than original stocks did back in the day!
heres a good thread or you... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...-speakers.html
always read the forums before buying something for our cars.. i did and found out about getting small magnets in FBirds!

Re: Front speakers that will fit an 87 Trans Am
This is great info - my car has no speakers (they were out when I bought it), and I've been looking for replacement speakers. Regarding the Pioneer TS-A4674R 4X6 - the depth is 3.8" according to Amazon's site. Will they fit in the dash of a 1989 Firebird Formula? I've been searching the forum as I noticed the dash speakers are a really tight fit.

Re: Front speakers that will fit an 87 Trans Am
I installed the Polks the other week and DID have to modify the dash some. Had to pull out the gauges and trim a portion of the dash opening behind the speed for the speaker to seat all the way. Also had to heat up and massage the duct work some to clear the magnet. No way the left speaker would have fit otherwise. That said, it wasn't major fabrication and definitely worth the effort.

Yeah, I'm not sure why as I've seen several posts on here of these being a drop in for the firebirds. Unless Polk increased the magnet size or something changed with the dash in the later third gens?

seems more likely they changed the gauge and duct area between 87 and 91

Re: Front speakers that will fit an 87 Trans Am
I use a pair of Focal 5,25'' in my Trans Am. They have a large magnet. The only problem was that the plastic covers in the dash was blocking for "speaker travel". SO I had to skip those, have not found a good replacement for the covers yet, but the speakers sound beautiful in the dash and with the tweeters mounted just below the dash pad.
