Recommendation on good speakers
I'm staying with the OEM radio/cassett player w/equilizer. I know it all starts with the receiver, but I would like to get others recommendations on good quality speakers to make the OEM radio sound better.
Thanks in advance.

If you would like to keep your stock OEM look but have a nice sounding system, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

50 different people can give 50 different recommendations. Your ears should decide.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
Amp is key. This will allow a decent speaker to actually reach its potential. Without an amp a really good speaker can sound no better than something you can grab at bestbuy or walmart.
Depends on your budget. Lots of good speakers out there. Just pay attention to the specs, and how they need/should be powered. Also pay attention to the type of speaker and read up on how it can suit your needs. 4-way, 3-way, 2-way, component...Generally you will get some of the best sound out of components, but there are some coaxial speakers that will give them a run for their money.
You dont "need" to spend 300$ on a pair of interior speakers to have a great sounding system, but dont think you can swing by wallmart or target and buy some sony, dual, or jenson type speakers for 40 bucks and still have something awesome.
If you are going to use a subwoofer I like to build systems that don't use a woofer in the interior components. I use mid-ranges and tweeters instead of small woofers on the interiors because of the advantage that there is a subwoofer producing the needed bass. Full size mid-ranges are much better at producing clear, crisp sound than a coaxial, or a component.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
Thanks for the feedback everyone...My 89 had a Pioneer aftermarket audio system in it when I bought it. Probably bought at WalMart. The speakers are Pioneer. I wanted to go back to stock so I found an OEM radio/cassett player w/equilizer modified with an aux. jack for my Ipod, and put it in a year ago. The sound sounds tangy no matter how I adjusted the equalizer. I want to keep it stock, so I'm looking for speakers that will fit in the 4x6s in dash and the 6x9s in the sail.
I'm not opposed to spend a few dollars for a good quality sound...As they say...You get what you pay for...

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
My cones were old and wanted newer speakers but wanted to stay very stock but improve the sound since it sounded kinda muddled. I owned a TA back in the day and knew the stock head unit could sound better. it was the age of a paper cone. they were in good shape mind you... So I bought the following off Amazon and bought connector/adaptors from crutchfield so I didnt have to splice anything
Pioneer TS-A6964R A-Series 6"x9" 3-Way 400 Watts
$49.95
Pioneer TS-A4674R A-Series 4"x6" 3-Way 200 Watts
$47.99

Re: Recommendation on good speakers

Ultimately you will be limited by your factory radio. My recommendation would be to look into a processor unit like an Audio Control LC6. This will allow you to interface aftermarket amps to drive your new speakers appropriately without losing the appearance of your factory deck.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
Pioneer can be really good speakers depending on what quality level you get. Anything @ walmart is bottom of the barrel. Best buy is really hit and miss on quality too.
Any way never buy the bottom of the line. And watch out for the 2ohm speakers that say they will work on an aftermarket head unit cause i have yet to see them actually work. A few brands i recommend are Alpine type R and S, Infiniti (don't remember model), Rockford Fosgate Punch and Power, Kicker RS and SS (i like that the kicker models match camaro models!
), Focal, Boston Acoustic, JL, and thats all i can think of. A four channel amp would be ideal to give ideal power and control frequency ranges of the speakers with the usual built in crossovers. Crossovers are a speakers best friend. As an example, no 4x6 will handle bass very well or very long.
Always look at the power rating of the speaker. Ignore Peak power ratings, always go by RMS (which by the way most head units really only put out about 35 watts RMS per channel not the 40-50 peak they advertise) and try to a close match.
Happy shopping!

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
^ agreed. Most head units are actually a lot less than 35 watts per channel. Most are closer to 17 RMS per channel.
A decent speaker with less RMS will sound better than a similar speaker with more RMS on factory or aftermarket head unit with no external amp. Has to do with the amount of power it takes to move the magnets.
You need an amp to take advantage of a speaker with a higher RMS rating than each channel on your head unit. Especially at higher volumes, Its a huge difference.
You will have to look at things like crossovers if you intend on running a non coaxial speaker, which I suggest because a non coaxial setup will eat a coaxial setup anyday.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
Any speaker is better off with a crossover. All speakers are designed to operate in a certain frequency range. Usually its the low bass frequencies that will muddy up the sound or tear apart a speaker. Did it to the speakers in my 69 camaro. I just run a head unit and speakers in that car.

Coaxial have internal crossovers, that's why the one +- wire going into the speaker can run a tweeter, mid, and woofer. Not necessary for an external Xover on most coaxials. Which is why my statement above makes sense.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
Yes you are 100% correct. Not trying to argue with you. If I may share my experience to why I believe in crossovers. My 92 has ahad the same boston acoustic components in it longer than the 13yrs I've owned it. Always amped and crossed over. They have been been cranked up and had their share of "abuse" but they've survived all this time. I put some JL coax in my 69 and only a few weeks later they physically came apart. I only had the bass up enough to be able to recognize the music. I believe if the were on crossovers they would survived and had better sound quality.

You just have to have the P/N and the good part is they belong with the OEM Radio and fit right in.

If you go to a GM Dealer they will be twice the cost of the above.

IMO, I like pioneer. Yes, JBL and Infinity are probably better... but for cost for performance, I don't think it gets any better than pioneer. But I'm also a pioneer fan boy.

Re: Recommendation on good speakers
I don't see an advantage to a stock head unit but if you buy an adapter to run amps and good speakers check out Memphis car audio and find a dealer in your area get m class speakers all have their own external crossovers sound as good nor better than infinity kappas in my opinion and are not ridiculously expensive
