I'm at a lost OEM performance sound

I have an 87 GTA with the performance sound system when I depress the amp button on the dash and slide to gain nothing happens right away, after a minute or so the sound in the speakers becomes distorted as it seems that its trying to gain but to no avail now my question is the following is the amp and speakers both shot and if so where can i purchase these items if anywhere. Also did these systems come with any other speakers other than the 2 in the sail panels and the two in the dash any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Sounds like the amp is bad if its all the speakers that are affected. As for finding an OEM replacement, try ebay, but I doubt you will find one, you will probably just have to go aftermarket.

the performance package actually had 2 speakers in each sail panel - a 4x6" full range and a 6" "subwoofer"; i agree it sounds like the amp for the rears has gone bad

Pull your sail panel covers and see if the small 5 1/4 subs have rotted foam surrounds, (they are nearly 25 years old). This may be causing the distortion. If so, they can be rebuilt. Here's a link.
