Need advice on an audio system

I'm new to the site and audio in general. I have a 87 Camaro with stock speakers and no radio. I'd like to upgrade my system but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the options. What i want is a fairly affordable good sounding system. I am mainly looking for a decent sound quality and some bass while sticking to just a new head unit and replacing the 2 dash speakers and 2 rear 6x9 speakers and possibly an amp. And I'd also like to be able to add a sub once i get some extra cash.

Currently I'm looking at the Boss 822UA head unit because I'v read its fairly easy to make the double din fit and it seems cheaper than a comparable single din. Although all i really want out of it is an aux port with good sound quality so, if anyone knows a better option let me know.

As far as speakers and amp go I'm fairly lost.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, QC

for 6x9s try running these rockford fosgate prime R1693s they sound amazing.

as for a headunit i run a sony xplod( ill get the number later) and it runs top notch and the aux port is amazing. only flaw is the ports on the front.

boss isn't well known for their quality, you'd be much better off with an entry level pioneer or kenwood if you're on a budget. don't rule out buying a quality used deck either if you're on a budget.

I am interested in maybe adding a unit like your Alpine. Could you possibly give me the number so that I can read up on it? thanks.

Re: Need advice on an audio system

Thanks for the tips.

I assume with those speakers I wont need an amp considering their low power usage.

I'v read you can mod the front speakers to fit 6x9s rather than the standard 4x6 is this worth the effort or will a nice set of 4x6 sound just as good?

Here ya go even got a couple of pics. Oh and that was the installed price I have seen the unit alone under 200.00 but that would be the price without a remote. Anyway it is a Alpine CDA-105 and I don't even have an amp and it has plenty of good sound Take Care

you don't need an amp. I'm running them with off the stock wording for the headunit. You can get them on eBay for under $50. And as for dash speakers I'm running 6.5s and did no modification. I just dropped them in and wired. Sounds great!

Re: Need advice on an audio system

On my system,i only spent about 150 on speakers. Im running 2 Alpine 4x6's in the dash,2 6x9 Alpines in the pillars,as well as 2 Midbass speakers. I also have 2 10 Inch subwoofers in the back. It sounds great. I know most people on here are Anti JVC,but they have always made the best products for me IMO. I have a JVC KD-LH300 headunit, bought it back in 2003. Still works like brand new.

The word budget is fairly subjective.

I'm a big fan of Pioneer or Kenwood headunits.

Rear 6x9's have a look at JBL GTO series (go for the two way).

Be careful with front speakers. The drivers side is more shallow than the pass side and not all speakers fit (trust me on this )

Loads of amp and sub choices depending on your budget and where you want to put everything.

Re: Need advice on an audio system

I agree with The Project. I'm a huge fan of Kenwood head units and JBL makes a fine speaker. With a Kenwood head unit you should find something with front AUX and USB ports, and most give you around 22 to 25 Watts / Cannnel. That's fine as long as you intend to add a sub. If not you will be dissapointed with the Bass response. As for the sub, hands down go with JBL GTO series 10" and an ALPINE mono amp around 500 Watts. I mounted mine in the full size spare tire well.

Re: Need advice on an audio system

I bought a Pioneer DEH-P6000UB last year this thing is great in my Iroc. It has a USB connection and a aux connection. It has a crossover on it so it works great with my subs that i put in. It got a great deal on it and there are plenty of parts for it. check it out
