Original '83 Z-28 radio
I'm looking to get my Z-28 as stock as possible. I'm very close, not much has been changed, was repainted 20 years ago. Now I'm looking for a radio. If anyone has one they wish to sell I might be interested. Also if anyone has a pic of the original radio, it would help in my search. The original radio is long gone...........
Here she is 58,500 miles.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
nice Z. I see the old CAMARO, CAMARO, CAMARO fabric inside. You will have to see what radio it came with by looking at the RPO codes if available. YE1 YE2 or YE4 or YF1 are the choices unless you have another code that is U63. I have some pictures if needed I believe

Thanks. She's my baby, had her for 21 years now.
Can't find the RPO codes anywhere. Not in the glove box or the compartment in the rear hatch. Could they be anywhere else?
And yes it has that is the funky Camaro interior.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
your RPO codes should be in the center console. but if not, i've seen them in the back storage compartment too (the one in the hatch area). you have a GORGEOUS Z28! i love that interior, always have. is it a Crossfire car? looks like i see that under the Z28 emblem inside on the dash...or is that just the 5.0 Liter HO badge? as for the radios, you may be able to find one if you go to shops that repair radios...some of them sell factory type radios. good luck! glad to see someone working to keep one of these beauties original!
edit, this picture has an original radio in it, from a 1983 Motor Trend comparo...

this one is dated as a 1990 UM7 radio, but it's the same one that would be in your 1983 i'm fairly certain.

Thanks for the compliments, Yep, she's a Crossfire 305: I looked in both places you mention and can't find the codes. Thank you for that pic, that radio does look familiar. But it has been 21 years since the original was replaced.
Odd to think about it, I'm 42 years old, bought her when I was 21, spent half my life with this car..............LOL.

Older pic taken before I put the original rims back on her. (Actually had to find a set of '83 rims, mine were stolen out of my moms garage a long time ago.)

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
I seem to remember a source that you could give them your VIN and they'd give you your RPO codes but I can't remember who...have You tried calling GM with your VIN and see what They can tell you? I mean, I know years back I was restoring a 78 Monte Carlo and I gave them the info and they sent me an "info pack" on the car with all kinds of cool stuff in it...

Hey coyote, this is what I was given by another TGOer. These show some of the older radios. I'm thinking with the way your car was optioned that it had the upper grade cassette player, maybe the bottom left one. Have fun with the search. The camaro white book has a rundown on the percentages of camaros with the certain radio models if interested.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
I actually have the original radio from my '83Z.....been sitting on a shelf for years. I'll have to take a pic. Not positive if it works or not...never tried it. I think it has a cassette player.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
Thanks Dman, that will help.
I think you are correct about the options on my Z-28. It seems it had alot of the higher end options. So it makes sense it would have the higher end radio/cassette.
Anyone have part numbers for these? Ones I have found are:
Electrically Tuned Cassette Recorder 998040 Part No. 16023010
ETRCassette with Seek and Scan - 997606 - Part No. 16008040
ETRCassette Signal seeker, with 5-ban equalizer - 998041 - Part No. 16028451
This is a much bigger PITA then I thought it would be, I mean damn, its just a radio..............LOL

the layout of the radio is the same as the close up pic but the preset buttons stick out further you pull on them to set the preset you want.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
Allright...It's dusty and dirty since it's been on the garage shelf for 8 years...and I stand corrected, no cassette. Just AM/FM. My car is one of the early L69 HO models in '83. Pic of front and back. Not much to look at...oddly, it looks a lot like what screaminformula posted, yet a little different on the bottom. I have a dash plate that's still on the car that says "Extended Range" whatever that means. Oh, and the labels are long gone so I couldn't find a part#...

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
LOL nothing odd about it looking close to the same. GM didn't really change their radios much over the course of third gen production...that's why I posted the pic I did knowing that one Of the pics was NOT an '83.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
I think he's right on. That's the big difference I see between the pics of the '83 radio vs the '84's. The faceplates are also different between the two (lower portion)...

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
My '83 Berlinetta came with an in-dash factory tape deck that had only one button for cassette operation. Push the button to the left for rewind, to the right for fast-forward, and push it in for eject. I'm positive it was a factory radio, as everything on the car was original when I got it in '89. It cassette features were quite different than the tape deck I have in my '87, and I have never seen another tape deck like it. I just saw it a year or two ago in my parents garage, but I think I threw it away.

Re: Original '83 Z-28 radio
I found a radio that pretty well matched what you guys suggested. I don't think its an exact match, but its damn close. Now all I gotta do is get the proper adapters. My wiring harness has been hacked up a bit to fit a newer radio, so now I gotta undo some of the hack job.
Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.
