Pretty much every aftermarket HU is too large for the Bird pod... I solved this by notching out the radio support in the heater duct.

Just did this... might be air ducts or the stock unit bracket.

Re: stereo unit too long?? need info

Basically, all you have to do is get the HU set up with the mount in the radio pod as straight as possible and then mark where it hits the duct with Wite-Out or something and then cut about a half-inch into the duct support at the marks. Depending on where the HU harness is, you'll probably need another notch to one side or the other that is about another 3/8 to half inch deep, and it's going to be a fight to get the harness situated so the radio will flush mount. Before I notched the duct as I wanted the HU flush mounted, it used to take me about 15 minutes to install the HU, and now it takes about an hour to get all of the associated wiring tucked where it needs to be for the HU to sit where it's supposed to. If you really want a pic, I'll need to dig out my pod from the top of the garage and get the duct out of it (it's held into the pod with 4 screws, 2 by the vents on the bottom of the pod and 2 inside the back where the ducts join the intermediate duct, where the foam sits, all 7mm).

Yep, what he says.

You have to completely cut out the pod support for the radio in order to flush mount most decks in our cars. I know several who have done it. Don't worry about cutting the support out, its just plastic and won't make a difference.

www.humount.com probably has what you need, along with some fancy mounting plates.

Re: stereo unit too long?? need info

im also having the same problem except there isnt enough room for wires/rca outputs. so the little box with the hole in it (used to support the factory radio)is just an empty support?

Yes, if it interferes with mounting the head unit in anyway get rid of it. There really is no reason to keep it at all.

Re: stereo unit too long?? need info

that should free up some space! how much space does it take up? also was there any special tools you used to cut it out? and one last question haha did you take the radio pod out to cut it out?

Re: stereo unit too long?? need info

i know i did.. just loosened it up from that bolt in the back and pulled it till she came loose from what i can remember. then used one of those multi mate tools(dremel works fine) and cut the funny looking support thing. now the HU slips all the way to the back without any problems. if theres alot of cabling you might have to hold down wires as you slip the HU in. like i did with 2 rca coming out.. a ipod cable attachment... aux cable... speaker wire going in... 2 remote wires... basically you get the picture.
