Front Speakers Replacement

i just took the original front 4x6 speakers out of my 87 firebird because they where blown.

1. can i put any 4x6 speaker in there?
2. do they sell speakers that clip into the existing clip for the audio?
3. if they don't how would i install new speakers?

picture is of the speaker with the clip.

Re: Front Speakers Replacement

I put a pair of Pioneer 2-way speakers up front in my GTA. With the supplied plastic bracket, they bolt in with the two factory holes, and kind of clip into the factory holder at the rear. No interference with the ducting setup in the dash. Here's a link at Crutchfield:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130TSG4...FBrand|Pioneer

I've also got a mint set of factory speakers for sale if you're interested.

Re: Front Speakers Replacement

You have to make sure the speakers are not to deep maybe say 2 1/16" also you can put 4" instead of 4x6 just need to get a mount adapter. look at crutchfield's web site they will give you the sizes that will fit your bird.

Re: Front Speakers Replacement

Look into a set of Boston Acoustics 746 plate speakers. I put these in my dash and IMO they're the best 4x6's you can get.

Re: Front Speakers Replacement

Most 4x6 fit, if you use a 4" the adapter brackets are usually too tall. I never saw any for use with the stock audio clip I had to splice in an adapter.

I have part numbers for 82-92 Camaro factory speakers.

Weirdly, the part number varies depending on color.
These are your choices of colors:
  • Black
  • Medium Beechwood
  • Red Flame
  • Dark Gray
Maybe they are talking about the cover for the speaker.
The factory speaker comes with a flat grille-cloth that appears to be integral with the speaker.

Re: Front Speakers Replacement

You can put any 4x6" or 4" round speaker in as long as the mounting depth is not greater than 1-7/8" for mechanical speedo cars. Anything deeper and you'll hit the whatchamacallit on the back of the speedo. If you have an electronic speedo car you have more room for mounting depth but magnet width becomes an issue at that point because without modification you will hit the plastic ducting that runs under the dash.

If you order your speakers online from Crutchfield they usually supply a wiring harness that will plug into the factory speaker harness and has two female plugs on the end that plug into your new speaker.

Most 4x6 speakers will fit, pioneers are your safest bet. i have polk DB's in mine and the drivers side was a PITA, if you have the metal bracket from 89 back you can shave it out to fit a 6.5 round coaxial speaker in, infinity slims work great, the biggest issue with 4x6 speakers is they really arent meant for any kind of bass so theyre overdriven quite often and blow, plus theyre mounted horizontally so any dust or dirt on your dash will fall on them and settle making its way into the coil eventually.

As a heads up Rockford speakers will not fit without serious modification, theyre over sized and way too deep. Pioneers, factory, or inifinity slims are a good way to go, or polk speakers with minor modification. Pop into your local reputable car audio shop and they (assuming theyre not crooks) will give you an idea of what will and will not fit

I don't believe so mantaguy, 2 refers to an adapter for the OE clips which most people just cut off and wire accordingly. The ANY in #1 is the bulk of my response, 3 is answered by others as well with the adapter clip or just cutting the plug off and wiring the speakers in the proper phase. The OP didn't mention anything about a factory speaker beyond the fact that his are blown. Personally I would take a dumpy set of boss or Sony speakers before relying on an OE from 1990 but to each his own I suppose.

Whoa there snippy. Call me crazy but in the 5 years I've frequented these boards...."OP" is the original poster. As in post #1, the originator, the first guy to ask a question. So maybe you should trim that back a bit before you snap at someone. Don't get upset because someone jacked the thread and you contributed to it causing a confusion.

I used a set of infinity kappa's 4 x 6, but I had to 'modify' the casing that held the speedo cluster.. Just the black plastic shell that holds it in place, not the actual cluster.

Opshesquishy,,,What did you use to modify the speedo case? I just bought a set of Infinity Kappa 4X6 speakers and was disappointed that they would not fit. I was not up for cutting anything at the time but I really love these speakers. Installing them in an 89 TTA.

Got out my die grinder with a gnarl bit on it.. but any dremel tool with some sort of small cutting disc should work.

I just laid the speaker in place, marked as best I could, then just shaved off the top of the speedo case.. I only needed a extra 3/8 of a inch.

Installing those speakers was the easy part of my build lol..
