Broke 16yr kid

Hey guy's! Just blew all my money on a excellent 89 camaro RS!The stock speaker system is pretty bad. Can someone suggest some very CHEAP 6x9's that will fit my car? Or does someone even have some old ones they could send me for free? Thank you! God bless!

Re: Broke 16yr kid

I went with some pioneer all the way around, and LOVE them. I think it was something like 60 for the front pair and 60 for the back. I forget the model number, but look on crutchfield, they were direct bolt ins.

Cheap = Walmart. Look for Pioneer or JVC.

FREE = wreckers.

Good luck.

Re: Broke 16yr kid

I'd suggest a plan (if the car doesn't run or isn't reliable, then a sound system as a priority doesn't make much sense). What's the car need most? Tune-up, tires, struts/shocks, braking components, exhaust?

Start slow with your rebuild/restoration and do it right the first time or you'll end up spending more money and time than necessary .

I agree with what James said. Invest your limited cash into making the car reliable and safe.

As far as getting speakers for free, thats very possible, however i would suggest posting your location and seeing if anyone local to you is willing to give them to you and then you can take the ride to get them. Im sure there are plenty of people willing to help a 16 yr old with parts they cant really sell anyways. Not many people are going to spend money shipping the speakers to you though so you have to go get them.

Post some pics so some members can give you advice on what the car might need.

As someone else mentioned, you can get Sony XPlod's for less than $50 and i heard they sound decent.

Pawn shop, I got 2 duals for the front and 2 pioneers in back, or you can just get 2 speakers in the front and replace the back with 2 bullet tweeters, if you want loud.

On a 20+ year-old car? I suspect, unless you're extremely lucky, that there are plenty of issues--or will be.

Best of luck with your project.

Re: Broke 16yr kid

Try a paper route, or part time at McDonalds (my local McD's actually pays extremely well, lol). Your parents can't argue with that, can they? Unless they want to buy everything your car needs now or will need later (some things are expensive!), I don't see why they wouldn't want you to earn a few dollars yourself. Old cars break down often....

As for speakers, due to the age of the stock speakers, pretty much anything you put into your car will sound a hell of a lot better than what's in it now. Just don't turn up your system too loud or else you'll blow it. Same with your sub. I know it's hard to resist at your age, but this will keep you from having to buy new speakers all over again in a few months (or sooner).

Because my dad was a mechanic all his life, and I grew up in his shop and saw many stupid/lazy/ignorant/smart people with all kinds of cars, here is my advice... Cars are expensive to maintain! Start setting money aside now so that later down the road you can afford to fix whatever goes wrong. You will need to replace oil and instal a new oil filter in a few months, for sure. It is not an option. Frequent oil changes will keep your engine from blowing up. Saving money for an oil change is a lot easier than saving money for a new car or new engine and then paying somebody to install it for you, or learn to do it yourself. Fuel pumps can suddenly clog, belts can suddenly break, new spark plugs or their wires can suddenly need installing. Tires go bald real quick after too many burnouts (DON'T drive on bald tires! Replace immediately!), and tires are not cheap. A burnout done wrong (it only takes one time) will also burn up your clutch, break your motor, break your transmission, break your drive train, etc. Please treat your Camaro nice and take good care of her. Remember to have fun too, but not at the cost of speeding tickets. Respect her power and maintain her well, and you will have her for a long time. Enjoy!

Here's a website that sells all kinds of car audio related stuff. This is the page to their full range speakers, I hit the button for "Price: Low to High", and you can see that they start very cheap ($6) and go up from there. Click here for link.

I've got all 4 speakers out of an 86 bird, great shape. You pay the shipping, you can have them. But again we need your location.

I took a stab at your zipcode using 53293 from 45440. Would have to ship in 2 boxes due to the size. $11.35 each. If still interested paypal to mrzhvac@aol.com

Re: Broke 16yr kid

I think there's plenty of us here broke and unable to do anything with our cars. I'm twenty two, jobless, and the only reason I haven't had to sell my third gen is 'cause I sold my friend an '01 Sebring I was gonna keep, all that's doing is keeping it insured and gassed so I can look for work though

However, if I wasn't using my Sony 6x9's from our '73 Fiat Spider (Sold, years ago), I'd send you them.

My deck is possessed with the ghosts of country music past, I'm tempted to take the speakers out, if I do and your still looking, I'll send you a PM. They're pretty good, pretty sure you can get recone kits for them, make them like new.

I was in that club when I was working fast food and dating a girl
Craigslist and the junkyard are your best friends. Make friends with other people with 80's GM cars or F-bodies- many parts interchange and you can score great deals or trade that way. Having a friend who's into audio is great too, sometimes the guys with really sick systems will get discounts or sponsorships from local shops and might be able to throw some of their old stuff your way.
You'll definitely want to get a job, and I highly recommend a garage, tire shop or oil change place. It makes money, you'll learn things, AND if you work for an awesome company you can get stuff for free or really cheap, which is great if you're meticulous about your maintenance and you tend to go through tires quickly
Make sure you keep up on your oil, steering system, brakes, belts, coolant, tires, tranny and diff fluids, and if your car looks nice and isn't rusted out wash it and wax it regularly to keep it that way! These cars are insanely reliable if you maintain them, but clutches and automatic trannies do fail and are expensive when they do so you will DEFINITELY want to have money set aside for that.
It'll all come together eventually; I'm only 20 and my car's getting there slowly but surely. Just work hard, take care of 'er, and don't forget to have fun in the process!
