Re: just bought a 86 t/a audio suggestions

Try Sonic Electronix. They have good customer service, and helped me set up an excellent system for my F-350. Rockford Fosgate Prime 150 x2 rear amp, RF speakers, an RF 300 x 1 subwoofer amp, and a Kicker shallow mount 10 inch subwoofer. Running an OEM CD6 Audiophile through a converter that they recommended allows aftermarket amps to integrate with the OE HU. The Audiophile has an 80 watt amp built in which powers the front door speakers. We also have a 12 disc Pioneer CD changer linked directly to the Satelite feed on the HU. The system functions perfectly and it thumps very well. It was complicated to set up, and the tech recalled every item without difficulty. After he got the list of items, he gave me a nice discount. It and sounds like an aftermarket system, but looks OE. They will be able to match up components for a nice aftermarket system if you want to start from scratch.

That's a thought. If it is a UQ7, you may want to repair/update it.

Re: just bought a 86 t/a audio suggestions

It's a bit on the pricey side, but I put a Kicker HS-8 in the back. It's about the size of a regular 500-1000W amplifier, and has just enough bass to make the music come alive. If you search, you'll find my thread about it, as well as my review. If you're in the mood to conserve as much space as possible, it's a great solution.

If you car has a gain switch, than it had Performance Sound when it was new. It sounds like the system has been scraped or bypassed sometime in the past. Often the amp or HU goes bad, and the owner updates to an aftermarket system. Performance Sound is not worth restoring unless you plan to keep the car all stock or for show purposes in the stock class. Since your car sounds like a nice driver, I would continue with aftermarket. The amplifier is a small sheet metal box located just behind the passenger kick panel, almost underneath the dash. If your amplifier is still there, and you want to sell the amp, let me know. If your car has the OE rear speakers they will be a pair of 4x6 like the OE front speakers, and a pair of 5.25 subwoofers with tiny subwoofer boxes. The whole setup is mounted in an adaptor plate that fits into the 6x9 holes. Since 6x9 speakers will fit in the rear sail panels, it opens many possibilities for an upgrade. Ian Kee at Kee Audio has a sets of custom made speakers for thirdgen upgrades, that he sells for a very reasonable price .

Re: just bought a 86 t/a audio suggestions

The stock 6x9 speakers were mounted to a rectangular steel bracket. I have those with the stock speakers from a 1989 Firebird.
I'm very interested in your speaker boxes as well, but being in France, shipping is going to be high, even without the four little speakers...maybe we could make a deal though...

I am willing to buy the whole system if the price is right and the condition of the items are good. The only part that I am in need of at this time is the amplifier. Ian Kee is going to install new speakers and subwoofers in my OE speaker boxes, adding insulation and sealing the units as he re-assembles them. He can custom make speakers and subwoofers that are compatable with the OE system only much better than stock. I am trying to keep my car all stock, so it does not get moved into the modified class at the shows. If you want to sell the amplifier, and/or other pieces send me a PM with your price, and I will get back to you. Charles
