building a "wall"

I would like to know how much cubic airspace is in the hatch of my camaro for the purposes of building a "wall" type enclosure. I have used the search function, but couldn't find anything good. I don't want to destroy the interior or anything, just hoping for around 7 cu ft or so to do maybe 1 18" sub. Thanks guys!!

Well, to give you an idea, according to my CAD data the "trunk" area (where this tg has it's amps to the top of the crest (gas tank hump) is approximately 4 cu ft (if you fill that entire area).

Can't say that I agree with the idea of building a 'wall' for your set up but just remember:

Height (inches) x Width (inches) x Length (inches) = Cu IN

Cubic Inches divided by 1728 = Cu Ft

(ie 39*25*14 = 13,650 Cu In....13650/1728 = 7.899 Cu Ft)

Re: building a "wall"

Thanks, I know how to calculate cubic feet. The problem is I don't have my car to measure. I just wondered if anyone had a ruff estimate. The Idea with the wall was I wanna run a single 18" with a ton of power and thats probably the only way I'm gonna get the volume I need. Roughly 6-7 cu. ft. after all displacements.

I'll see if I can get you some dimensions later today after work.

Re: building a "wall"

That would be great. I figured in this forum someone would know the rough estimate. I figured I would start the wall behind the back seats and build the enclosure down into the entire hatch. I'm not sure if this is the route I wanna go, but i've been toying around with the idea.

Trust me, very high dollar audio equipment there, and powerful at that.

Re: building a "wall"

I'm familiar with that 21". Its a little pricey. I figured a wall would be the best way to get loud, due to the odd shape of the hatch which limits conventional boxes. Plus, I've always wanted a single massive 18". how many inches are between the floor behind the back seats to the beginning of the hatch glass? Could even fit an 18, or 21 if I did do a wall?

Re: building a "wall"

The best way to get loud is to fit as much cone area into the car as possible. Multiple small subs will give much more total area than one or two bigger subs. Fill that wall with a bunch of 10" subs and you'll get way more output than a single 18".

Or you could cut costs, and run two or three very nice 15's or just two 18's.

Get two of these OP, 600$ for two 18's, and both will handle a realistic 1200 Rms each.

Re: building a "wall"

why do ppl think they have to have huge speakers, or tons of them to be loud.
i posted my camaro with 2 '12s a few years back that did 147db with a single rockford 301m amp.

the subs were in the back seat area yes but i only needed 2 to hit that spl, and lets face it the backseat area is kind of useless for anything ,more then a 4/5 yo kid, so i opted to lose the back seat area infavor of keeping my trunk space for grocerys and stuff

It isn't about tuning your box to 40 hz. Its about tuning to low 28-30 hz and large speakers do well in such low tuning.

Exactly. I've always wanted a single 18 in a big box with alot of power. I've had every other combination of subs you can imagine. Just wanted to do a unique crazy install and have the amp and 2 6" precision ports laying around and figured, why not. The purpose of this post was to simply see if any of you guys happened to know the total estimated air space of the hatch area so i could see if this was possible.
