MOAR POWER - or how big an alternator can I get?

So I've got a Jensen head uninstalled -

Amazon.com: Jensen VM9215BT 7 widescreen Bluetooth/multimedia system: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Jensen VM9215BT 7 widescreen Bluetooth/multimedia system: Car Electronics [1]

I've still got an alarm with remote start to add, this one: Amazon.com: Audiovox APS997C Car Prestige 2-Way Remote Start Keyless Entry and Security System Alarm: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Audiovox APS997C Car Prestige 2-Way Remote Start Keyless Entry and Security System Alarm: Car Electronics [2]

Just with the stereo, I'm noticing voltage drops a bit when I idle or I'm first backing up in the morning, to the point where the stereo has actually shut off once or twice. I'm using a brand new battery, but it's the stock rated size for the car.

I'm not sure what the amps is on the alternator, but it's a stock size, nothing super powered so at most it looks to be around 63-70, maybe less.
My research says I need a bigger alternator for my toys, so I'm wondering what you guys are using to power the tech and what will easily fit for an alternator upgrade.

I would get the electrical system tested. I am running a JL Audio 250/1 at 2ohms and measured per the instructions to put out 250watts rms at 3/4 volume (the point where my head unit distorts) Even at 3/4 volume on songs with a ton of bass, I hardly see any voltage drop. Heck, my blinkers make my volt gauge flutter more than my stereo. I nearly overloaded the car once. Had the headlights on (with large aftermarket fog lights), stereo up, and turned on the AC, that drained it and the volt gauge dropped like a rock. Turned off the AC and it was fine again.

So turns out this may be related to another issue. Was doing a tune up and the timing jumped BAD, discovered the timing bolt is seized. Taking her into the shop monday, once the timing is all fixed up and the plugs are replaced, I'll see if I still get my drops when going into reverse. Hopefully this'll fix all that up.

You can get a Stock 108 Amp Alternator if you think yours isn't putting out.

If you have TPI,stock alternator is a 108 amp 17 si type-carb engines used smaller 12 si:94 amp for L69 and 78amp for Lg4 IIRC.All of the si types are prone to bad connection between the stator leads and the crimped on terminals that bolt to the rectifier-can be fixed by soldering.this is the usuall cause of weak SI type alternators.

You can grab an Ohio generator. I just installed one in a limo bus, it was rated at 200 amps but tested at 240!

They are probably the best high output alternators on the market, in my mind. They are hand wound and made to order. Great people to deal with and VERY helpful.

You can use a |GM 140 amp alt. They came stock in some Caprice and Caddy's. You may need to modify the bracket. to fit but otherwise it's fairly easy to do.

There is a thread with this mod if you search.

So turns out all my power problems were related to my timing. Go figure :P Got my car back from the shop today where they fixed up my timing and went ahead and did my plug change I was gonna do, and it's working like a champ now! So very happy
