deck question

I SAW A CD/RECEIVER IN A BMW THAT WHEN IT WAS OFF A PLATE HIDE THE CONTROLS. WHEN TURNED ON THE COVER MOVED UP OR DOWN AND THE
DECK MOVED OUT ABOUT A INCH OR SO.
I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY NEAT BECAUSE I FELT IT WOULD DETER THEFT (A PIONEER SUPER TUNER III WAS STOLEN OUT OF MY 84 Z28).

CONSEQUENTLY, I NOW HAVE THE MONEY TO REPALCE IT AND REPAIR THE DAMAGE THE VANDALS DID TO MY CAR AND SOLICIT YOUR INPUT ON WHICH DECK/STERO TO BUY THAT IS REASONABLY
SECURE AND SOUNDS GREAT!
I AM LEANING TOWARD A PIONEER AGAIN DUE TO IT'S RELATIVE EASE OF INSTALLATION AND IT FITS THE STOCK RADIO AREA SO WELL. ANY SUGGESTIONS GUYS?? THANKS FOR THE HELP

Kenwood makes there decks with a mask on them, similar to the BMW you saw. When off, the face plate flips over to show a blank side. Pioneer and Kenwood makes some good inexpensive decks.

Why not just get a head unit with a detachable face?? I just take the face off and tuck it under the seat or in the glove box if I don't take it with me. Out of sight means out of mind.

JVC make a deck that has that flip face, it is a really good deck, my buddy has one in his ranger and it sounds really good. and it is relitivly cheap compared to clarion and pioneer.

Back in the day I had a pullout tape player (old huh) and never left it in the car. People used to tell me to put it under the seat or in the trunk. One day, I had the radio with me in a store and when I came out, everything that was in my glovebox and under the seat was everywhere. Some A hole broke in and they were looking for the radio. (idiots broke 2 windows to get in...LOL) This is just to let you know that "out of sight = out of mind" does not always work... -=My 2cents=-

Kenwood and JVC are pretty much your 2 choices right now. As said above, the Kenwood flips the face right over. The JVC works a little differently, but looks good when turned off. To me the JVC looks fairly retarded when it's on, and the ergonomics are horrible for everything except the volume control. I'm also not fond of the sound quality of the JVC. Sony also makes a radio that turns black when turned off, but it has absolutely no controls on the black side. To do ANYTHING the face has to flip over to the controls. I havent' used it, but it doesn't look like it's very ergonomic.

The JVC el Kameleon is the deck thats being refered too with the moving face. One word of warning...if your going to go for that deck...BUY THE WARRANTY. The El Kameleons face involves the use of 3 major motors. If ONE of those motors were to die on you, and the deck is out of warranty...unless your VERy handy, you now have an overpriced paper-weight. A definite downside to that deck...besides the fact its ugly as sin, and uncomfortable to use. The downside to the kenwood is...well (zips up flame retardant suit) Kenwood sucks. Now before you click madly on the reply button to tell me I'm an idiot and dont deserve to breath the air we all share, thats just my opinion...i've never had one good run in with kenwood. The Sony deck...I like it. I installed one with a system in my cousins thunderbird, along with an alpine V12,and infinity perfect 12, and it was a very nice set up. the face having to flip every time you use a control is a bit inconvinient...BUT, in a black interiored car...that deck looks GOOD. The display on the face is very nicely layed out, and looks beyone good, so it helps to compensate a little for the bad button location. All in all, I'm not a really big believer in the whole flip face movement. Any thief who knows half of what he's doing will recognise that in a second, but of the three mentioned...I like the sony the best. Whew...got kind of long winded there.

yeah the other thing i dislike about the jvc is how little the damn controls are.. i got big fingers (a well hung lesbian?) no way i could operate one of those while driving.. lately ive been a big fan of pioneers.. although as far as securty id have to rate alpine #1.. and theives know it too....

You're an idiot and dont deserve to breath the air we all share.

I'm a fan of Kenwood. I've found that their products are quite reliable, and their higher end stuff is as good as anything else in the price range. I also think they are the last remaining manufacturer with a sense of good asthetic style. Granted, I have their top of the line unit which is designed strictly for competition, but hey. It's performed admirably for me and I'm extremely happy with it.

Whoo...wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. Like I said, the whole kenwood thing is my own opinion, and I'm sure there are thousands of people out there who would ask me why the hell I use Fosgate. The car stereo world is so much personal preferance that it's insane. I have not had any very good run in's with Kenwood, BUT all my runin's have been with their lower end models, so I am not exactly qualified to pass judgement on them. Perhaps I make too large of generalazations, but hey, it gets the point across. Well, theres my tangent for the day...
