I have a Pioneer KEH-P6600 cassette deck running 2 12inch Fosgate Punch subs. I just bought a Pioneer GM-X942 amp. I have no clue about amps at all. I tried to hook it up the other night but it didn't work. I hooked the RCA wires from the rear output jacks on the back of the stereo to the RCA input jack on the amp, a wire from the system remote control wire on the stereo to the system control hookup on the amp, the speaker wires from the hookups on the amp to the 2 subs, the power wire from the battery to the amp, the ground wire from the body to the amp and i got nothing at all. the amp did not even come on. Not only that but my front speakers don't work now. They stay at the same volume the whole time that the sereo is on. I can turn the volume up, down or even to 0 and the speakers still stay at the same volume. I did notice that the front speakers work fine anytime that the front output wires on the back of the stereo are touching metal. I have no idea what the hell is going on!! Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for all of your help!!

 

get a 12v test light ($2 at an auto store) does the remote have 12v when the stereo is on ? use the light to check all power connections going to your amp. make sure your not using substandard wire with messy frail connections, you need solid clean metal contact. it sounds like youv'e got it hooked up right, check the polarities on your power, if the "remote 12v signal" isn't getting to the amp,you can just tap into a known good 12v ACCESORY wire with a switch. meaning: the remote "turn on wire is just a low current dc signal to "key" the amp.also check the fuses

 

first thing you should do is like the other guy said, make sure the red light on the amp comes on. if that turns on, check fuses, replace any that are blown. next check the ground wire. where did u ground too? do u have any other amps in your possession that you can test to see if you have power and the proper ground? (i have this cheap $30 jensen that i use to check the power/ground supplies) check the mute buttom on yer deck too, you never know.

if the light doesnt turn on, then run a wire directly from the battery to the amp around the car (meaning dont bother hiding it) see if that works, if it does its yer wire thats the problem.

Just a note on testing the remote turn-on lead, sometimes the current draw of the test light is too much for the head unit. This happened with my older Alpine, and it shut the head down. I had to turn it off and back on and it worked fine again. I then checked it with a voltmeter.

It does sound like the remote wire is where your problem is.

Since you say you have no experience with amps, I'll ask you also if you have a fuse in the power wire. That is one thing that is often overlokked in a first install, but it is very important. I have a friend that found out the hard way!

Ok heres the deal. I left the ground wire off of the amp and off of the stereo. Now the d*** thing works. Sounds pretty good too. And the deal with the front output wires, well i have no idea what the deal is with them. I cut the plugs off of them and taped them down to the top of the stereo, so my front speakers work fine now.
