question about kick panels or dash speakers

now, i know it wont sound right to have both kick panels and dash speakers hooked up together from what i've seen in the past on here. but my question is which should i do? 6' speakers in the dash, or 6' kick panel speakers? would one or the other way be better for either my t-top coupe, or my convertible? thanks again.

Even though its unconventinal I would say get the kickpanels. In my t-top Camaro, my side view mirrors shake when the volume goes up, and those are the stock 4 by 6's. Its kinda looks like the guy $#!+stain, i mean mustang, on Boyz In The Hood before he got jacked in the drive-through.

It would sound much better if you put them in the kick panels.

Kick panel. The farther forward they are, the farther forward your soundstage is. You also get a washed out image with them in the doors because you get the "headphone" effect, and in addition, you hear more reflected sound than direct sound. All combined, you get a lousy image. Kick panels move them in front of you, and provide your ears with a line-of-sight type of direct shot.

i dont think u could ever get a set of speakers in the doors cuz of the window. you would have to put a spacer or sumthin in there. the kicks would still sound better because of what jim said about imaging. something like 46' and 42' for kicks and like 24' 42' for door speakers. (dont quote me on those measurments) if u want the real measurements look at the add in crutchfield under the kick panel heading.

I have JL Evolution 5.25CS's mounted in Q-form kicks and in the doors. I have the ability to control the balance of each, from all kicks to all doors. The set in the doors definitely produce more bass (tweets mounted in window remote panel). I was hoping to be astonished when listening to the kicks for the first time but to my surprise they were no better or worse than the doors. I now use a combo of the two with no imaging problems. This of course, is a matter of opinion. Everything is bound to sound different to everyone!

I had my doors built out to accomodate a 6.5" woofer, and use kick panels for midrange and tweeter. I have power windows, so the door had to built out far enough to allow the window to go all the way down. Sounds great to me, especially with 2 10" subs in the back - but the 6.5" woofers really help with the mid bass.

They built out the door with fiberglass. It was a while back, but I think that it cost around $500-600 to do both doors - pricey, but I wanted something that looked professional, and it wasn't something that I felt I could do that well on my own. It is an 89 GTA. You said that you want the foot room, and with a clutch, I guess that would be a must - but I really don't see that much of a loss of foot room with my automatic, and the kick panels really help with the imaging. The woofer in the door doesn't matter as much for position, as the lower frequencies are more non-directional.

Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck!

Well, the only pictures that I have of how the doors were built out are below. I also used a sound deadending spray on the inside of the doors, and a material similar to Dynamat (made by Cascade Audio Engineering) over the inside of the doors. You can see that in one picture, the window is rolled down, and in the other, it is up - when rolled down, there is almost no clearance behind the speaker, which is why they built out the door panels almost far enough to house the entire speaker. I don't know how hard it would be for someone who has worked with fiberglass, but I know that the place that did it for me had to pull the door panels off twice and rework the fiberglass to allow the door to close and the speaker to fit properly (that is what they were doing when I took the picture of the door panel.

The end result is well worth it though (to me anyway), and I am pretty sure much better sounding the it would have been with just the Q-Form kicks.
