Head Units

Ok, this may seem like a dumb question, I know you guys probabally answered it a hundred times, but do the 1.5 din head units fit flush in the Camaro's? Or do they all stick out? Its been driving me insane! I can't stand it sticking out like that.

I've got the Pioneer DEH-P77DH 1.5 din deck and it fits perfect. Fills up the hole and does'nt stick out past the radio trim plate.

Cool! I was looking at a couple of pioneer 1.5 din decks, and was unsure of their fit. Looks like thats what I will do, although, I am also looking into some alpine 1.5 din decks, I wonder how they fit.

Some stereo shops sell flush-mount kits now to put a DIN stereo in nice and flush in our cars. It looks great, and allows you to pick whatever head unit you want without it sticking out.

These kits are fairly new. A year ago I made my own out of black, grained plastic I bought from Parts Express. The new kits they have will make it look just like mine, check it out....http://www.geocities.com/jee89/mycar.html

Most radios will need to stick out because of depth issues. Most single din units are deeper than the dash can accomodate. It was necessary for me to do fairly major modifications in both my firebird and in my camaro to flush mount my Kenwood. Now I have an Alpine in my other camaro, and it sticks out over 1/2" beyond the flush style mounting plate that I am using. I'm going to need to modify the heat duct in the center console in order for the radio to slide completely into place. The 1.5 din units are not as deep and will fit just like an original GM radio.

The only thing really keeping a head unit from sliding all the way back (if I remember correctly) was a metal tab that, I believe, is supposed to support the factory radio. Saw it off Then slide that puppy back in, and all is well!!

Some will tell you not to, because people have said it will ruin the structural integrity of the dash. I say bull sh*t. MY car has no rattles or shaking anywhere, and for an 11 yr old 3rd gen, that's damn good

Does anyone have any pics of a flush mounted 1.5 din unit?

Jason, in my firebird and in my camaro, the aftermarket radio hit the molded plastic heater passage before it hit the metal bar.
