Head unit help
Head unit help
For the second time I had my head unit stolen, so now I see that I need to install an alarm. The head unit that I had in this time was a KDC-PS909 in, I liked it but now I want something with a detachable face. Should I get a Kenwood KDC-X915 or something like that that only uses preouts or should I just get a high end radio with the internal amplifier also?? I was also wondering if there is a way to make the head unit hard to rip out of A Trans Am.

i say get something with a detachable face, definatly and carry the face with you, everywhere even at home.. detaching it and sticking it in your glovebox is kinda useless.. :P if you dont wanna shell out booku bucks, some poineers (one of my fav brands) have a DFS alarm, which basically sets off a alarm that sounds thru your speakers if the faceplate hasnt been put back on within a programable ammount of time.. if your familiar with aliquippa at all check out my boys at advanced.. talk to richie, he'll hook ya up nicely..

just having a detachable face doesn't mean they won't take the stereo again. i had a head unit with a detachable face and they took the faceplate instead of the unit. (shame on me for not taking it in at night)i think they got spooked and bolted before they could get the rest of it out. never the less they trashed it enough i had to replace it. i now lock my car every night. if you have been locking your car and they're still taking things i would strongly suggest a security system. as far as making it hard to get out, there are usually tabs or something on the metal shroud on the unit itself you can use. good luck!

I could never say it enough....Protect your Investment! Get a good alarm system before you spend any money on car audio. An alarm won't absolutely guarantee protection but a thief will definitely think twice before messing with your car.
If you have a deck with a faceplate, either keep it with you when you park the car or hide it in a place where you wouldn't likely check for it. Thieves like to do their work quickly.....make your car look like a difficult mark and nobody will mess with it.
As for DFS Alarms, they suck so don't depend on one.
A good way to secure the head unit is to weld it to the DIN chassis...or use double sided 3M tape. I helped a friend do this on his car and the only way to remove the stereo was to take out the screws which takes alot of time....otherwise you would destroy the radio trying to pull it out of the dash.
