new radio components....
well now that ive got everything out of my car, time to put the maro back together...
i pulled out a stock gm 8-track player (yes it does work!! i blared ac/dc back in black 8-track over the engine knock for 18 miles) w/ Clarion SE-980 6x9 & Clarion SE-675 4x6.
i plan on replacing it with all Kenwood eXcelon equipment. Kenwood eXcelon Z828 head unit (cd player that reads mp3) (22 watts RMS / 47 peak x 4 channels).
Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XR901 6x9 (65 RMS / 260 peak)
Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XR500 5 1/4" (40 RMS / 160 peak)
Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XR400 4" (20 RMS / 100 peak)
Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XW10DB+ 10" (200 RMS / 800 peak)
Kenwood eXcelon KAC X501F (75 x 4 / 150 x 2) x2
the head unit would power only the 4" in the dash. 6x9 behind the sail panels and 5 1/4" in the doors powered by amp (75 x 4). 10" subs in spare compartment and lock box (take out the cardboard for the box) powered by amp (150 x 2).
would this be too much of an over kill?? is the excelon equipment really worth the price?

I don't think it's over kill but not a wise use of the right stuff. I'm gonna use Crutchfields prices to make a point.

then what would be the right components to use?? a head unit that plays mp3 on cdr is required. other than that, i want to get the best i can. ive heard a kenwood set in a maro (4th gen w/ same speaker setup) and i just bout loved it. i know the excelon stuff is expensive. is there a better brand to use?? the DJ's kicks r really popular around here it seems and infinty kappa series speakers. what about subs and amp??

Yea DJ's kicks are VERY popular here because Q-forms are really cheap plastic. Their flimsy and vibrate really bad. DJ's are fiberglass kicks that are pretty strong and custom made for our cars and from the many pics I've seen the fit, finish, and SQ is top notch. The Q-forms run from $150-$200 while DJ's run $140 right now in his GP. To have your local shop to build you a set for your car you're looking at $400-500! SO to compare that to $140 DJ's are a steal at that price. The Infinity's are kinda the "best bang for the buck" speaker. They offer really good SQ, power handling, and can be gotten off ebay really cheap!
As for subs that's another one of those have to listen to them things. Subs are like Components every brand has a different sound to it so it's trying to find the one that has the sound you want, can handle the power your wanting to use, the right ohms, and the right price range. Kickers, JL's, Infinity's, ID's, and Rockfords are probably the most popular ones. Amps look for one with a low THD(total harmonic distortion) level, lower the better. A good frequency response(human ear can hear 20-20000hz). Go by the RMS power wattage, not the peak. One that has large heatsinks to keep the amp cool. And that has a crossover built in. The more flexible it is like 2ohm stereo, tri-way, preamp outputs and etc. is a plus for later down the road or in your install. Some of the most popular amps are Kicker, Rockford, Alpine, JBL, and JLaudio. I hope this helps.
