How much Dynomat required to do the whole car?

How much Dynomat required to do the whole car?

Are there any other brands that work just as good?

What kind?

Does the spray work good?

i used up 25 sq ft of peel and seal just on the back half of the car, and didnt even cover all of it. so i'm figuring about 75-100 sq ft to completely cover everything

do not waste your money on dynamat. there's raammat (can be found every once in a while on ebay, highly recommended), peel and seal (used for roofing, exactly like dynamat, found at home depot or lowes), mcmaster hi-temp mastic or visco mastic (better than dynamat), and b-quiet. i did a lot of lookin for this stuff in the last month . the cheapest and most accesible was the peel and seal at about $1/sq ft. i'm satisfied. just make sure for most of these you use a heatgun (or hairdryer) to heat up the product while sticking it down.

Yeah, I bought a roll of RAAMmat (50sqft) from Rick and he told me that I'd need at least two or three more in order to do the whole car. But that's for the WHOLE car: doors, sails, roof, floorpan, rear well, dash, headliner, etc, etc.

I used 3 bulk packs of dynamat xtreme, doubled up on the firewall so im going to need 1 more so i can do the doors and other little spots and probably do the insides of my fenders.

Still fighting with the console/radio pod might end up mounting the radio where it should be and the a/c control vertically on the side. or something like that, or go back to a 3rd gen one and modify it so its more rounded, the bulk packs have 9 sheets that are about 2'x3'

not to insult you, but i question your logic. Why would you want to pay such an inflated price for just a name? Raammat is definately as good or better as dynamat extreme, and you're not paying anywhere near the price. Peel and Seal is the same, and you're still paying a lot less for it than dynamat. i heard many many positive things about msmaster products too. so why pay 100+% more for a name? its not like you are actually gonna see it, so whats in a name?

thanx Z28racer

i haven't heard much off these other brands and i have personally seen and witnessed how dynamat works, when it comes time to buy i am going to do more research, but that is what i am doing right now. i want a ballpark figure on what it will cost me to use dynamat and ill go from there, but for now i am looking at gettin dynamat, who knows things might change cuase im broke now and i might not see this until a month from now and thats why i am researching it now while im broke and have no money to be doing anything to my car.

Just looked at that Raammat crap on ebay, the aluminum layer on it looks about as thick as reynolds wrap foil LOL, so far its at $70 for 50 sq ft, so a little better then half price and I bet you'll need 3 layers of it to equal one layer of the xtreme, heres their quote:

"View of the driver's side door showing one layer of the matting installed to seal the door. The inside of the outer door skin has multiple layers, the doors shut with a solid Mercedes like thump! "

Yea 1 layer of the Xtreme and my roof/doors are more solid then they even need to be, i'll stick to my dynamat

that all i ask. you have a very valib point on researching before buying. i agree total and did the same thing when i started to buy stuff for my system. and yes, you get what you pay for most of the time, but their are some eceptions. i just wanted to help ya in your quest for knowledge. if ya need further info, i highly suggest looking into the sound forums at www.sounddomain.com, www.termpro.com, and www.elitecaraudio.com. there are many educated people there who can give you help on anything ya need. good luck to ya.

Maybe if you sprayed enough to make it 3/8" thick the spray would work better then Xtreme, and i'd still doubt it.

spray is not really meant for sound deadning. its meant to stop vibrations. most of the stuff here mentioned is more for stopping vibration than deadning. people who put multiple layers of the stuff down notice its a lot quieter because it is so dense and thick that it is making it quieter. spray is also best in hard to reach places that you cannot lay down regular deadning. but yes, all of these products are grrat at doing both jobs. and wow, am i sorry that i didnt use spell check on my last message....

Assume what you will, but I have a roll of RAAMmat sitting in my workshop and the stuff seems pretty good. It doesn't have "Dynamat XTREME" written in big, bold letters all over it, but as for it's properties: it's actually one mil thicker than Dynamat (45 mils compared to 44 mils) and doesn't require heat in order to apply it. Both use the same materials and concept, but RAAMmat is much cheaper and slightly thicker. You do the math

I don't mean to argue, but the guy who sells this stuff (Rick McCallum) is not messing around. He's a well respected IASCA competitor and would not use anything that compromised his system. Brand names are nice, but it's often a good idea to seriously consider quality deals. Example: I'd choose DJ Sexay kicks over Q-forms any day. Like I said: I don't mean to argue, it's just food for thought

One question, have you personally compared RAAMmat to Dynamat extreme ?

Reason I ask is because I was under the impression that RAMMmat is not quite as good, but you could double up the layers and still be cheaper then extreme. That is the argument many products use like b-quiet etc .

But, sq foot for sq foot, I know of no other product that is as good as dynamat extreme. Now when cost is a factor, I say buy the cheap stuff and use multiple layers.

I wasnt saying that RAAMMAT wasnt thicker, it may be, but the aluminum layer on it doesnt look anywhere near as thick as my Xtreme, that raammat looks like its regular dynamat with some aluminum foil glued to the back of it, and as far as requring heat, it doesnt take ANY heat for Xtreme, the stuff is VERY sticky, mike you might be right on doubling up to get the same properties as xtreme, but from what i saw ($70 and still had 9 hours, plus shipping) on ebay, for 50 sq ft, heh after doing some reasearch my point is proven, taken from a car audio forum site

"I just got a roll of 50 square feet today from elite car audio. It looks similiar to the extreme dynamat but is so thin. This will be applied to my doors and am wondering if im going to have to double up on it."

Yep i'll stick to the Xtreme at only $160 a box, 1 layer and its done, peel n stick, and no waiting for shipping.

Yeah, both are great products. Not everyone has access to extreme at such a good price though. Retail is like $250 for the bulk pack. In that case, I think I'd do multiples of RAAMMat.

But since I'm sponsered, I use Dynamat. If I had to pay retail, I'd be layering the car in RAAMMat

I have to admit, I've never done a direct comparison between the two. Since I still have some uninstalled RAAMmat, I'll try to get my hands on some Dynamat Extreme in order to check them out. If I can I'll post to let people know. And I'll try to be as objective as possible.

Kind of a moot point for me anyway because there is no way that I can afford to buy any really useful amount of Dynamat. Cost is a major factor for me. So my first effort is going to be a single layer of RAAMmat. If that doesn't cut it, then I'll have to look into a second.

Z28Racer: I'm going to see if I can pick up some leftovers from a friend of mine first. He thinks he still has some pieces lying around. Nothing huge, but sufficient for a visual comparison. If he can't find any then it would be great if you could send a bit. I'm pretty curious now as to how they'll stand up against each other side by side.

If you'd like me to ship a small swatch of RAAMmat to you for your side of the comparison test, then let me know. I'll just mail you a letter with a piece in it.

I'm local to Rick and I've met the guy, listened to the car and seen the product up close.

To be honest with you, I would personally use the stuff if I hadn't already gotten some Esoteric Hotmat aluminum backed sound deadener.

I previously worked at Scosche as well, and their stuff (accumat) is made somewhere else as well.

Dynamat is the same thing. You can contact whoever makes it and have your own made (as have lots of other people).

So if you look around enough, you can find an equivalent of the extreme stuff, like rick has.

The extreme is nice stuff, but its also pricey. If you can afford it, by all means go ahead. If you really want to make an informed choice, email rick and ask for a small sample (probably a buck or two for USPS postage) and then see what you can come up with.

Its ok i'm only paying $160 each bulk pack with tax anyway, locally, and dont have to wait for shipping, im happy just seems like comparing it to what im getting the xtreme for, if you've got to do 2 layers of the RAAMMAT to equal 1 layer of the Xtreme I wouldnt come out much cheaper and have to take all the time to do 2 layers, plus as you can see im just about done with mine

That's what I'm saying, though: I can send you a piece so that you can compare it directly with the Extreme that you've got.

As for the number of layers, that just depends on how meticulous you want to be. I've heard of people doubling up on Dynamat Extreme in places they consider to be sensitive/important areas as well. Meanwhile, others find that one layer is perfectly adequate. So you can't judge quality based on how much matting one person uses compared to another. Try the direct comparison. Just email me or send me a private message with your address and I'll mail you a small piece.

Anyway, the friend I was hoping could find me a piece of Dynamat hasn't gotten back to me yet.
Hopefully soon...

Z28racer: The guy who was going to give me a piece of Dynamat Extreme fell through: he says he can't find any scraps.

If you're still open to the idea of sending me a small piece, I'd still like to compare the two. Just send me an email or a private message.

DJSexay posted the results in a seperate thread that I believe was entitled "RAAMmat vs Dynamat Extreme" or something to that effect. Essentially what he found was that Dynamat Extreme was a bit thicker and seemed better in a head-to-head comparison, but he couldn't say whether there was enough of a difference to justify paying that much more for Dynamat.

On top of that, Rick McCallum of RAAMmat has stopped producing the original type of matting that I sent to DJSexay in favour of a thicker, higher quality matting, so who knows? To this day I've never been able to compare the two head-to-head since I can never find anyone who uses Dynamat Extreme.

Regardless, I'm more than happy with the roll of orignal RAAMmat that I used on my brother's doors and trunk area, and I'm actually in the process of sound-deadening my entire car with the new RAAMmat material right now. Let you know how that works out when it done.

This is an old thread

I have FATMAT and I'm very pleased with it. I got 100 square feet for $120 after shipping. Great Deal. Just Double up and still cheaper than the "mainstream" crap.

That's the stuff I'm using now. I can tell you it's noticably better than the original RAAMmat I had (and that was used in the RAAMmat VS Dynamat Extreme comparison thread), but like I mentioned before: I myself have still never had the opportunity to compare it head-to-head with Dynamat Extreme. Regardless, there's a lot more of the sticky black tar stuff in the V3 material and the aluminum backing is new too.

It was done on Thirdgen in a thread called "RAAMmat VS Dynamat Extreme" by DJSexay, a highly respected enthusiast who now owns a late model Firehawk and doesn't grace the thirdgen car audio pages so much anymore, although you can find him nowadays on LS1.com. Anyways, I'll bring the old thread to the top for you so you can read what he had to say about it.
