ok guys you know best.
i am new to the car audio. but i have a dilema. i am taking my interior out of my car to change to black, and i putting a ROLLCAGE and SFC's and i was wanting to put sound deadening material down. should i get the spray type or the Dynamat. spray would be easier but harder to remove someday. but what do you think. i am going to be totally redoing this car and i need an expert opinion. it has to be quiet inside. and should i put this throughout the whole car: roof, doors, behind rear seat area (trunk), floor, firewall? and up the side pillars? i want it quiet no rattles and squeaks. please help.

Do a search on sound deadening in the car audio forum. You'll find plenty of information on sound deadening. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives to Dynamat that work as well or better. Hi temp mastic sheets with the same specs as dynamat can be bought for a little over $1 ft^2 online. Check out the old messages and links in them, then decide what works best for you. You can do an entire car for $200-$300 using these other options as opposed to $1000+ for Dynamat. If you want the car totally quiet, you'll also need to replace your weatherstripping if it is beat up and whistling. By completely deadening your car, it's possible to have no road noise up to 70 mph and up. Keep in mind that this stuff is HEAVY. If you go overboard, you could end up adding 200-300 lbs of weight. If weight is a concern, only do the key areas: doors, trunk area, area behind the 6x9s and don't forget the license plate to get rid of that damn rattle. Sorry this was so long, but I hope this answers all of your questions.

OK weight isnt a deal with me. not comfortabilty is. and with the cage i wont have back seats. i am putting a cage for a few reasons. but not for racing. so you are saying dont use the spray. and go with this MASTIC lining. ok what about doing the roof. i get a lot of noise since i have a hard top and i was already planning on new seals. and how do i put this stuff down. does it come with glue? how do i put it in the doors and behind the 6x9's? i havent taken the interior out yet so i dont know what i am dealing with. thanks

Here's a site where you can get the sheets:
http://www.mcmaster.com
It costs $12.79 for a 32"x54" sheet. Do a search on sound deadening to find it. It's EXACTLY the same as Dynamat. To apply it, cut it to the shape you require, clean the surface real good, peel the backing of of it, and stick it on. It helps if you have a heat gun to help mold it to the surface. To properly dampen behind the 6x9s you need to pull panels off. If all you want to do is cure rattles from that area, just pull the speaker out, and cover the metal behind it as best you can with the sound deadening material. I wouldn't really suggest this though. With the doors, you might want to look into a spray since they have pretty irregular surfaces. My best advice is to really look at what you have to cover and figure out the best way to do it. Can't help you with the roof, because right now, I only have the trunk area and 6x9 area covered. When I'm home this summer and have a garage, I plan on doing the whole car. A combination of products will give the best results. Use the mastic sheets as your main material, but in some hard to cover spots use a spray. How quiet do you want the car? If you pull your entire interior and cover the entire car with two layers (you will need at least two layers), it's possible to make it even quieter at 70 than luxury cars such as Lexuses and Jaguars. Hopefully, someone else will join in this conversation that can really help out technically as far as pulling panels and taking care of the roof.

Oh yeah. Whatever you decide to use will basically be a permanent installation and be near impossible to remove.

ok i will have all panels out of my car in o say a month and a half. nothing will be in the inside. and i will have a little time before anything goes back in. so you suggest two layers and some spray. i know that since my car wont move much with the SFC's and the cage i wont have to worry about creaks but i love the way that when i am in my Grandmas 2001 deville i cant hear anything except the pur of her 4.6V8. oh its soo nice. and if i have all this right i hope to be paying what about a buck a ft^2. does that sound right. and since i am looking at two layers and jsut over 100ft^2 is about a layer i am looking at about $225. that about right.. thanks man

Yeah. You have the pricing about right. Sounds like you're going to have a really nice car when you're done. Just remember to take your time, study what needs to be done, and figure out the best way to accomplish it. Use the philosophy of measure twice and cut once and you'll end up witht the results you want. I'm curious. What kind of engine are you going to have in your car?

well mcconahay i am not sure what engine. i am thinking about all forged bottom end and afr top with a MR from TPIS. i am not totally sure. i dont want a 383 like everyone else. i would like to get my hands on a 400 SB, and put a 406 but finding one is too hard. i havent made up my mind yet. i am in the 13s so i am not really worrying it about it. i am worrying about my paint/body work and my interior right now. thanks for asking though , drop me a line if you have any ideas. jarrad
