1986 UQ7 Radio Replacement Help

Hi all,

Looking for help identifying the correct original deck for my 1986 TA. Through my research (thanks to this forum), I learned it has a UQ7 system, but I can't seem to find clarity on which original radio deck would be stock. I want to remove the aftermarket Pioneer CD player the previous owner installed, but want to make sure I'm looking for the right console. Any help would be appreciated in identifying and pardon if this has been asked in earlier threads.

Thank you!

Re: 1986 UQ7 Radio Replacement Help

The Sub-woofer system (UQ7) was used with any of at least 3 different Radios,.. UM6 ( basic cassette ), UX1 ( EQualizer radio ), or UT4 ( push button ). The only way to know what radio your car originally had is to look for the radio code on the RPO tag.

** have never seen UQ7 installed with a non-cassette (UM7) head unit; might or might not have been offered with that radio !

Hi again,

Finally getting going on my project here - so if I'm reading this correctly, I need a UX1 if I want to return to original radio. Thank you again for your help.

according to the order sheet that I posted you can use any stereo radio that was used for 86 and other years.

The UX1 radio is like this one with *****.

Dark grey face with lighter grey *****/buttons just like the one pictured.

UT4 is similar, but no *****, all touch buttons.

Camaro also had a similar radio, but all black, so don't grab the wrong one.

Thank you both - and pardon my ignorance, but am I reading my parts list correctly in that if I wanted to return to the original radio it would be a UX1? And that mantaguy's parts list includes other options that would also fit?

Yes, your car's SPID label shows it came with the UX1 radio option, and that's the radio that I posted. Pontiac is grey, as I posted. Camaro is black. But any radio up to 1987-88-ish should fit.
