invisible antenna

I read some posts about a radio shack antenna that you can stick to your windshield. I bought one today, and am really impressed with the reception and how invisible it is. It took about a half an hour to install, mostly because I was being extra careful to do a good job. I get AM and FM stations very clearly.

The catalog number is 12-1325 at Radio Shack. It was exactly what I have been searching for and it cost about $10. Don't count on the sales guys knowing what you are looking for, the guys I talked to didn't even know it was in their store.

I installed one of these last year, and I've had pretty good luck with it so far. Picks up all the stations I listen too, quite clear.

So what do you do, shave the current antenna off?

I have been curious as to whether these are better/worse than the stock ones...
Any opinion?

Sorry about the sales-person remark, APCAMARO. I'm glad to hear some people know what they have in their stores

You can cover it up with Bondo, I suppose. Do a good job with it, though.

Don't use regular bondo though if you go that route. Find the body filler that has fibers in it, should hold up a lot better.

I bought a fender that does not have the hole for the antenna, and I didn't want to put it back in. This is why I began searching for an alternative.

The antenna is not powered, you just have to ground it to metal. from the plug to the grounding strap is about 3 feet, and then an extremely thin aluminum wire with tape on it is fished through the dash and stuck across the windshield edge.

At the Radio Shck link they state that a Fender Cap comes with the Antenna. Just paint it to match your car or do what's stated above.

I know my body work and just useing bondo/duraglass wouldnt work on our cars. when the state patrol took out my tear drop light the just used bondo to fill the hole It didnt work. its all cracked out and messed up. The way to fill that hole is to weld or braze in a patch and then cover with bondo to smooth it out. Since our cars are unibodys the fenders flex some and bondo would surely pop.

I can't seem to find this on their website anymore. Does anyone know if it's still available? Or if there's another alternative? My power antenna broke shortly after the rebuild kit, and I'm not going to bother trying to fix it again.

No problem, I bought this little gem a few months ago. Metra AntennaWorks, # 44-UA200, "On Glass Amplified AM/FM Antenna". I haven't installed it yet (oops) but a couple guys had better alternatives, see this message for details. One guy, Kandied91Z, just moved his factory antenna whip to behind the dash and got better reception.

Oh and I'm 99% sure that JC Whitney still carries that on-glass wire antenna.
