I've never used this company, it was the first result of a Google search of "Recone automotive speakers"

Re: auto speaker reconing

These guys are local to me and I've used them numerous times to fix my home stereo speakers. I've never asked about car audio stuff though. https://circuitshop.com/

Re: auto speaker reconing

Why bother with the expense then since it won't be original? Just buy some cheap aftermarket poly cone speakers.

Re: auto speaker reconing

im looking into aftermarket speakers, for sure. i can get 4 ohm ones, but most of the aftermarket ones have a real high wattage, which for a stock radio im not sure i need. i have had instances where i have replaced factory speakers only to have the aftermarket ones not sound as well, or have to turn up the volume way up to get same results. im using a stock delco cd radio. thanks

Re: auto speaker reconing

I had to replace the surrounds on my UQ7 subwoofers. Did that job HERE.

There's a photo in there of the receipt with the sellers name and info. Worked out well.

Re: auto speaker reconing

I had ordered some foam surrounds for a couple different home speakers and was looking on their web site for what else they had and they offer foams for 6x9 AC Delco speakers. SimplySpeakers is the name and website. As for speakers, you don't need to care about peak watts. You care about RMS watts but even then factory stuff doesn't put out much. I believe the stock 6x9's are 10 ohm, so you'd want to find an 8 ohm. The lower the ohm the more power it will draw from the amp. Most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm, but you can find higher ohm if you look around. You can find cheap Scosche speakers at Walmart that are better than the factory Delco crap. I just replaced mine with close to period correct new old stock Acoustic Research 4" round front speakers and 3 way 6x9's. I'm running the fronts off the factory deck and added a Pioneer 18 watt x2 super small amp I had picked up years ago for like $25 new in box. I have the harness all made up but haven't been out to plug it together and see how it sounds. I had it hooked up with an aftermarket CD player but hated how much I had to have the deck sticking out to clear the stuff inside the console so I went back to the factory head unit.

I'm in Michigan also, but on the West side.

Re: auto speaker reconing

Numbers of watts have exactly nothing to do with how much sound a given speaker will produce, it's the speaker's sensitivity that determines how loud, per watt, that matters.

https://www.lifewire.com/speaker-sensitivity-3134850

What Sensitivity Means

Speaker sensitivity is self-explanatory once you understand how it's measured. Start by placing a measurement microphone or SPL (sound pressure level) meter exactly one meter away from the front of the speaker. Then connect an amplifier to the speaker and play a signal; you'll want to adjust the level so the amplifier delivers only one watt of power to the speaker. Now observe the results, measured in decibels (dB), on the microphone or SPL meter. That's the sensitivity of the speaker.

The higher the sensitivity rating of a speaker, the louder it will play with a certain amount of wattage. For example, some speakers have a sensitivity of around 81 dB or so. This means with one watt of power, they'll deliver just a moderate listening level. Want 84 dB? You'll need two watts — this is due to the fact that every additional 3 dB of volume requires double the power. Want to hit some nice and loud 102 dB peaks in your home theater system? You'll need 128 watts.

Sensitivity measurements of 88 dB are about average. Anything below 84 dB is considered rather poor sensitivity. The sensitivity of 92 dB or higher is very good and should be sought after.

Are Efficiency and Sensitivity the Same?

Yes and no. You'll often see the terms sensitivity and efficiency used interchangeably in audio, which is ok. Most people should know what you mean when you say a speaker has 89 dB efficiency. Technically, efficiency and sensitivity are different, even though they describe the same concept. Sensitivity specifications can be converted to efficiency specifications and vice-versa.

Efficiency is the amount of power going into a speaker that is actually converted into sound. This value is usually less than one percent, which tells you that most of the power sent to a speaker ends up as heat and not sound.

dynodave, was looking at your restoration pics, so it is possible to replace the radio pod and not have to remove the console? thanks

Re: auto speaker reconing

Yes, I was "this close" to pulling the console at that time, because it needs work too. But I had to draw the line somewhere! I went in to fix the power antenna, and as you can see, ended up doing quite a bot of other work.

If I'm lucky, I'll get my front garage done in time to work on the T/A there this winter. An interior refresh is in order (console, headerliner, another stereo refresh, and a few other odds and ends). It was scheduled to happen 2 years ago, but a small fire prevented that.
