Picked up a new head unit today
I was bored so I bought a head unit (no I'm not rich...the protection plan at sears is sweet...they have pioneer, jvc, kenwood and others...) got the new JVC Digifine SH55 and I'm pretty happy with it. Lots of little goodies that my Kameleon didnt have. I'm still tryin to figure everything out and get it set up right, but it seems nice so far and sounds pretty good. Doesnt look too flashy and its relatively simple to use (once you find your way around all the buttons, still learning whats what) but check it out...anyone else have one???

nah i had to trade it back in...here's the deal, at sears you pay an extra 10% of the purchase price, and you get a 2 year virtually unlimited warranty...i told them that the kameleon was skipping a lot (which it really has been lately) so they credit me the full price of the kameleon (like $269 or somethin it was) towards the new head unti i got...
yeah i work at sears while i go to school and those protection things are tight. I usaully take advantage of them though. Right before my 2 year warr. is up i'll trade the merchandise in.
i knew about the sears warr. and i still bought a clarion c.d. player and i hate their warranty ah well.

Those new JVC decks are sweet. We've got a 55 and a 77 at work, and I'm absolutely in love!! Simple, classic design, and a **** that feels great. They are a MAJOR improvement over older JVC decks. These new ones have a very good sound quality, do largely in part to 24 bit Burr/Brown DA converters. They've also got a 3 band equalizer that you can adjust the Q value for, and possibly the center frequency on one or 2 of the bands. You can save 7 preset curves. Not something you use every day, but it's good stuff. I also like the 2 sets of aux inputs on the 77. It makes adding external sound from an MP3 player or a DVD player real convienent.
That deck gets an A- from me.

hehe im glad some of the experienced people like it. i definately agree its an improvement over the older stuff and i'm likin theoptions. jim i assume u messed w/ one of them since u got them in...when adjusting the eq, whats the "width"?? it lets you adjust low mid and high width and im not exactly sure what thats doing...

The "width" is officially known as the "Q", not that knowing that will help you unless you're familiar with filter design.
Anyway, when you use a treble or mid boost, what you're doing is boosting or cutting a band of frequencies, centered at a certain point. Let's say that the mid is centered at 1khz. But, it's not just this infinitely small frequency that is boosted. An entire range of frequencies is boosted around 1khz, with 1khz having the maximum amount of boost. Are you familiar with bell curves from statistics? Same type of thing. Anyway, if 1khz is boosted 10dB, 2khz and 500hz may both be boosted 7dB, and 4khz and 250hz may be boosted 4dB and so on. With a wider "Q", a 10dB boost at 1khz may provide 9dB of boost at 2khz and 500hz. A narrower "Q" may provide a 10dB boost at 1khz, but only 5dB of boost at 2khz and 500hz. Get what I'm saying?
Here's another example that may help a gearhead understand it.
Let's say I put a different camshaft in my car that gives me a 10hp gain at 4000rpm. At 3000 and 5000 rpm, I get a 5hp gain from it. On the other hand, I could try a different camshaft that gave me the same 10hp gain at 4000rpm, but gave me a 7hp gain at 3000 and 5000. Know what I mean?
Anyway, being able to vary this is fairly useless on a head unit. On parametric eqs it's nice, because you can identify and eliminate very narrow frequency abnormalities that are caused by speaker placement or other interior acoustics, but on a head unit it's more of a "gee whiz" feature.

Hey Jim how are the new JVC's skip protection holding up? I am looking into a new CD player that can take tons of punishment from the bass hits from my subs cause my Clarion can't handle it & skips like crazy.

They almost never skip in our sound booth.
Seriously, I don't know. I haven't had any customers complain, but I've only sold a couple of the digifine units. Anybody that buys a regular JVC usually doesn't know much about audio, so they wouldn't be the ones to evaluate it's skipping anyway.
