Well, it finally happened to me!

All of my stereo equipment got stolen last night! I am pretty sure that it was a planned attack and I will find out tomorrow what the insurance will pay. This SUCKS!

Anyway, I am going to look at alarms tomorrow and I was wondering what to look for and what brands tend to be the best. I know, an alarm isn't necessarily going to prevent theft, but I would have heard it going off last night for sure. What types of things are good to have in an alarm (motion sensors, jarring sensors, etc)? Thanks

Matt

Get something with a name brand on it. Then get one of those pager alarms. If you keep it in your bedroom, when it goes off, you'll wake up. When it does, either call the police or get your double barrel.

Crimestopper (and other's I'm sure) have a system that uses 2 way communication with the remote, so if the alarm goes off the remote beeps and gives a visual confirmation.

Sorry to hear about your stuff being stolen. I had my system stolen my first year of college and have since been very careful with my equipment.

Are you worried about the car getting stolen?
Most likely the car is low on the thiefs priority list. They just want the stereo. I,ve had 4 systems stolen with alarms attached to the car's well the last three anyway. And people wonder why I wont go out and buy a 500$ head unit . Well you best bet is an alarm with a pager but not installed the normal way.
A while ago thiefs relilized that if you hook up a car battery to the car in a certain way that it will disable the alarm system, "I'm not going to give the details".
Get an remote install where you can use a motercycle battery that is not hooked up to the car's electrical system in any way.
This is the only way they will not be able to disable the alarm and get your goodies. There is two down falls to this system 1. You have to recharge the battery ever couple of months. 2. You cannot use the ignition disable to keep some one from stealing your car. But it is the most effective deturance other than pulling the system out at night.

Or instead of the motorcycle thing, just get an alarm w/ a backup siren w/ a built in battery.

I got a Viper alarm put on my car about a month ago and added the backup siren as an option. If someone cuts power to the regular alarm, the backup siren goes off and the only way you can turn it off is by smashing the crap out of it until it's dead, or with the key I have for it. I think it was $70 extra if I remember right.

2ManyWants-

What model of Viper alarm do you have? I like the idea of having a backup in case the main one is circumvented. That is one of my fears in a day when the theives know just about everything you don't want them to! I was looking at the ESP 500 or something like that today. I really like what it has with it, but I am not sure yet. Do you like yours?

Acutally Dall, they do work. I saw a demonstartion Of the battery tecnique at a stereo shop and it convinced me thats how 3 of my systems were stolen. I can even disable an alarm now and i have showed a couple of my friends who were disbeleivers that it could be done.

Irocet -

I have the 600 ESP. I originally wanted Clifford, but with it being bought out by DEI (the company that makes Viper) I was a little uneasy about the transition of ownership and the service issues that might come about with that. Also, I'm moving to CO soon so I went to Circuit City (didn't really want to do that either, but they wound up doing a decent job) so if anything goes wrong w/ it, I can take it to a CC in CO instead of driving half way across the country to a specialty store.

Vipers have a rep of lasting forever, so that's another reason I went with it.

There are 2 things I don't like about it though:

If you lock the doors using the power door locks in your car, and then hit the unlock button on your remote, the doors will not unlock (you have to arm/disarm). Also, if you use the silent arming function, it disables the warn away chirp. Other than that, I like it.

To the person who said, screw the alarm, im shaving my door handles.. I can pop yer window out without u hearing a thing in 2 seconds... With an alarm, the shock or proximity sensor will detect it and set the alarm off... Shaved door handles arent ****... Also, if u have tinted windows, its even quiter, the glass just spiders.... I grew up with thieves and still know tons... An alarm is the best thing to keep a thief away....

He's right about the door handles. A chunk of cement through my drivers window made it pretty unneccesary to use the door handles. Damn that was a lot of glass to clean up. Oh well, he didn't get my CD player, but it was damaged so bad it had to be replaced. Couldn't even get the CD back out of it without taking it apart cause the dumbass bent it. Lesson learned, if you have a detachable face, don't get lazy about taking it off.

Well, to answer the question before. They got into my car by popping the lock on the passenger side. They tried to do that with the trunk, but I'm guessing that since it is motorized it didn't release, so they went through the passenger side door.

I was interested in that Alpine unit when I originally started this thread also, but I did some investigating and it is no longer made from what I have been told. I know they still make alarms, but that particular one is no longer available. Later

I have been installing DEI products exclusively for over two years now, and I swear by them. In a month or two, DEI will have the two way technology. They're also coming out with a lojack type tracking system in the not too distant future. If I were you I would have a DEI alarm installed now and when the new line with two way technology comes out, have them upgrade it. DEI has an awesome return policy, so they can just send back the old brain and remotes for credit toward your new system. And silent arming doesn't get rid of warning chips, it gets rid of the error chirp, so if a door is open, you won't know it when you arm the alarm. Also, have them install a glass sensor, and maybe even a motion sensor. The shock sensors are pretty good as long as they are sensitive enough. Sorry to hear about your car.

Dal is more or less correct. If you jumper cable the body and try to fry the alarm, the alarm fuse is gonna blow. No alarm, no ignition. The thief also risks frying other electronics, such as the ECM. Then he is really not going anywhere.

I see where you are going with the "extra" battery, and I dont doubt you have bypassed your friend's cars. I am assuming they had some kind of Crimestopper alarm, or something out of JC Whitney.

If you take a proper alarm, such as a DEI or a Clifford AG4, that car is not going anywhere unless it's being towed. Take the AG4's wireless fuel immobilzer....We are talking about a wireless unit that transmits to the alarm brain for control of the fuel pump. You think a thief is gonna take the time to tear a car apart when there are no wires to trace? Trying to find a small unit that you could of placed ANYWHERE? I dont think so.

Of course anyone can still steal a stereo system on an alarm protected car. I dont expect my Clifford to keep my stereo safe. I just expect it to keep the car immobilized.
