Making box for 6x9s in sail panel???

it seems like if you take the metal backing plate (thing that 6x9 bolts to) out of the sail panel you could maybe work a prefabbed 6x9 box in there. that factory fabric crap sure takes up alot of room and I think its the same size as a small 6x9 box.
Am I reposting an old topic or has someone actually done this??

You could do it if you felt like putting a lot of time and effort into fabricating a multi-angled 6x9 box that weighs about 10 lbs. Honestly, unless you are running amplified 6x9's (a decent brand) and no sub, you probably won't notice a difference between the factory cardboard looking box and a custom built one.

Ive seen it done on the rear speakers of a sunbird, it sounded good but I dont think there is enough room in the sails.
What you might want to consider is some 6x9 cups like on an OE system that covers the entire back of the speaker. Stereo shops sell larger than OE 6x9 cups I would look into that before trying a wood box.

I'm sure "cups" isnt the tecnical name for them but an audio shop should be able to understand what they are if decribed. If you have a car with a trunk that no one has econo rigged speakers into just pop the trunk and look at the bottem of the speakers and you will see em. My sister in law had ones clearly marked keenwood in her sunbird so stereo shops do carry them or visit your local junk yard and take a look around.

Edit-Maybe one day I'll learn to spell

I think you're talking about these right? http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-SJdS9b38FiA/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=2&g=762&I=237 XT69&o=M&a=0 I've personally never tried them. Have any of you guys? Do they sound good, better than infinite baffle?

Well there called Speaker Baffles .... and the fit behind the 6*9's pretty easily, there' inexpensive, but put some dynamat one them to help unwanted vibration.....if you've got vibration on the metal put dynamat in between the speakers and the metal bracket it will greatly reduce the vibration .....especially with the stock speakers
