Question about Alpine 1.5-DIN head units

Someday I'll actually have enough spare cash to upgrade the sound system on my third-gen Trans Am, and I'll most likely end up getting an Alpine 1.5-DIN head unit. I've seen them at Tweeter and they're pretty sharp.

My question: Do the Alpine units have a reduced depth so that they can be flush-mounted in a third-gen Firebird/TA, or would I need to perform surgery on my car? If surgery is required, would it be any more difficult than if I were flush-mounting a standard DIN-size unit?

If anybody cares to post any photos of installed 1.5-DIN Alpine head units in a T/A, especially flush-mounted, I'd love to see them.

Thanks in advance...

This Alpine 1.5 is in an IROC, so I don't know how helpful the pic will be.

Both Alpine 1.55 DIN's are made to fit the hole. They are significantly shorter than the average DIN receiver so yes they will fit flush, no problems.

On your Alpine, does your unit have a digital clock readout?

If so, is the clock readout visible even if the radio is off, similar to the way the stock GM does?

jms,

The Apline does have a digital clock. The read-out is visible, however, only when the radio is turned on (the read-out is so small that I normally just use the console clock).

Thanks.

I'm still looking for a unit that has the clock similar to the way the stock GM unit is for my '88 GTA. My radio/tape is dead and need to replace it.

How much was the Alpine?

Mine was a bit over $400, but I bought from a custom shop. The net, I'm sure, would prove much cheaper.
