Well if your are looking for the BEST then there is a company called CDT that makes the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. Very accurate, smooth, and bright. As long as $500 doesen't bother you for a two way component set. Infinity, Memphis, Polk are very good, in fact there are many brands that are good but certinly not the best. It all depends on what you plan on spending.

Go listen to some. Its the only way to know that you're getting what you want. They all sound different, and everybody prefers different sounds. What any of us says really can only be used as a starting point for you to go listen.

IMO- Infinity is a good starting point for something affordable. The two best sounding cars I've ever heard had MB Quart and Alpine component sets (6 1/2"). Both were their respective high end models and quite pricey. In my old car, I had Pioneer 6 1/2" 2-ways, and 6"x8" 3-ways. I liked the 3-ways better; they were smoother to my ears.

please take my opinion into consideration because i do alot of intalls into various cars and lots of wiring. The very best? Infinity's are always nice and put out good clear sound. Personally i love the new BOSTON acoustic 6 X 9's (actually anything boston) and boston is a break off of the company bose... www.bostonacoustics.com
also....Alpine's are very nice...they have really high highs....i have alpine 3-ways in the 6X9 location in my car now... As for the deck... this is more important than the speaker.... Any deck is reasonably good but u want a deck that can power what you get and have the most tuning options.... usually anything that u don't buy from wal-mart is good... Alpine head units are sweet and pioneer is easy to use... JVC's el kameleon works great too but isn't detachable... well have fun...

That doesn't mean you've got a good ear, or most importantly the same tastes as him. I'm not trying to cut you down, but the best that any of us can do is recomend brands that we like so that he can go hear them for himself. It's important to spend a lot of time listening to different speakers, because they all do really sound different. You need to bring a bunch of different music with you and listen closely. I usually bring something with good male vocals, good female vocals, and some quality, intricate instrumentals. One set that sounds fantastic with female vocals may make male vocals very thick or very thin. Very few sound good with both. Intricate instrumentals will give you a feeling for how musical the speakers are. Just spend time listening to good music on good speakers and you'll be able to judge for yourself.

In terms of some stuff to keep in mind, consider Diamond Audio, Focal, Boston Pro Series, a/d/s, Rockford Fanatic Q, and probably dozens of others. To get a good idea of what sucks, listen to some of the Sony X-plod coaxes. Those are the worst sounding speakers I think I've ever heard.
