Sometimes I think that being an audio nut is a curse

Last night I finally bought Tom Petty's greatest hits, and before I went to bed I popped it into the stereo. I was listening to it, but I was not happy with how it sounded. Petty's voice seemed to drift either right of center or left of center depending on the song, and the rest of the image was a mess too. Most of the instruments were crammed to the right side of the soundstage, except for one lone guitar way out to the left. I got up, moved the left speaker then listened some more. Still sucked, so I moved it back. I measured and found that they were the same distance from center, so I was getting irritated. Anyway, after a couple more songs, it dawned on me. I stood up and noticed that the right speaker was about 2" from the back wall, but the left one was 6" away. I moved it back, sat down and found auditory bliss.

Sometimes I think life was easier when I thought that my $200 Soundesign system sounded great.

Jim, it is not a curse, it is a disease! and it is not curable.

heh, you should have seen the look on my wife's face when i told her i want to rearrange the living room (once finished with the hawk), because one speaker is in a corner, and one is near a doorway, giving a signifigant bias to the one in the corner.

lol... I'm glad that I'm not that bad, I can't afford to be! Besides, my friends already think I'm a nut.

On the other hand, though, it's getting to the point where if I want to listen to quality music, I have to go out and sit in my car. My home stuff is old, outdated crap and I can't afford to even begin upgrading...
...especially not until my car is PERFECT

I've got somewhat of a similar problem. My right speaker is in a corner, but the left one is about 4' from the other corner, which is part of why my image on the left is weak. I'm going to try putting a sheet of plywood there to see how it effects it. In general, the acoustics of my living room in this apartment suck. The room isn't very deep, so my soundstage is abnormally wide, and I've got hardwood floors and painted walls. It's a very live room. In an old apartment I found that my imaging and staging increased dramatically when I stapled a piece of an egg-crate matress pad on the wall right behind my chair. This absorbed all reflection right behind my head. When I get a chance I'm going to get one for this room too.

If I can't get it straightened out, I'm going to swap my living room and my spare bedroom.
