Alpine Plate 4x6's
Alpine Plate 4x6's
Has anyone had expirence with plate speakers? Are they better than regular 4x6's. I am looking into buying a pair of Alpine sps4629p plate speakers. Has anyone ever had these in their car? How did they sound? Thanks
the thing about plate speakers is that the magnet is off center, and the spot on the dash is in the center and the coaxils i bought barely fit into the spot. If you try plates, then you will be taking a heat gun and reshaping your dash on the passenger side where that heater vent is. at least i think its the passenger side.

I wrote a tech article on how to fit them into your dash. Since I'll be doing it on my new GTA soon (I got the plates today
), I'll be adding pictures to that article soon. It's not hard if you have a heat gun.
As for the sound, I don't have any experience with the Alpines in particular, but in general I've found the 4x6 plates to have a much better sound quality than their regular 4x6 counterpart. In fact, I just got a set of the discontinued Boston 746 plates that a place had stashed out back. I'm stoked, because they've been discontinued for a while.

I first had a pair of 4x6 speakers then swiched to Alpine plates and the difference was very noticable. You sacrifice a little bit on low range but more than make up for it in mids and highs. A lot cleaner sound. I now have a differnt car and the first stero component I upgraded was the dash speakers to Infinity plates. Just my experience...

The 4x6s were discontinued this past year.
I took pictures of my GTA install, and I should have the tech article online shortly.

Read the tech article on this website!! That's what it's there for.
You need to get a heat gun out and heat part of the plastic and push it back. Then you need to use a grinder to grind away some plastic.

i just put washers under my kappa plates and shaved 3/16" off the underside of the dash pad. Worked like a charm. No problems so far.

In less than a month after installing them, they buzzed. $80.00 down the drain (new). Since you got a good price used, then you won't freak if they blow or don't sound that good to you. I know there's the money factor, but I got DJ Sexay kicks and just have left over Lanzar 5 1/4" coax's in them for now. Even that is a world of difference from the 4x6's in the dash.
Just my 2c.
