subs and amp
Hey guys, i was just wondering whats the diference between having 2 10"s wired along with the rear speakers or having the subs wired to and powered by an amp? my friend has 2 10"s wired into his back speakers and they pound pretty good, so i was just wondering would they pound a lot harder with an amp? or what would be the diference?
Thanks guys, Ted
Thanks guys, Ted
powering the speakers from a serperate amp would be incredibally louder than powering by the headunit. I head unit usually has 35-50 watts max per channel, so that they mainly are running 20 watts constantly. Running 2 subs from a 2 channel or one channel amp would increase that constant power, compared to the amp you get, to a whole heck of a lot more power.
you have lets say a Sony XPlod 125x2 amp. Thats 125 watts to each of your subs constantly, which is easily 6 times louder than your headunit, and you not sharing the power with the rear speakers also.

you need to increase your definition of pound !
No offense, but subs really need to have a decent amount of power to thump out clear, loud, clean bass.
I have no idea what kind of subs he has, or the box and all, but i cannot see how it can be considered loud. The distortion must be terrible though!

he has a 93 plymouth laser. when the bass hits, it shakes his car. he has a sony xplod cd player. the bass hits pretty hard, but it is distorted a lil. i want my bass to be like felt in te ground as i go by. or like i want pple 2 cars in front of me to feel my bass when at a red light...lol i was thinkin i might be able to accomplish this with the subs i want to get. 2 10" RF HE2's powered by a RF 800.2 amp. i have a sealed box made specifically for the rear hatch well. i was just curious how much better a system would sound with the sub powered by an amp. his sounds ok, but i didn't mean like a crazy pound, it rocks his carback and forth though.

I don't mean to sound cynical, but do you really have to ask if a pair of Rockford HE2's powered by a highly underrated 400 watts apiece will "pound" better than a couple of subs getting a highly overrated 25 watts apiece?
I think your friend may be messing with your mind, it's unlikely that deck powered subs could "rock his car back and forth". However, if he does actually have this setup and you think it "sounds ok", then the HE2's and 800.2 may be overkill. I mean yeah, they'd be pretty crazy, but you could probably get away with a lesser system for a lot less money.
Go to an audio place and listen to one of their setups. Chances are they'll have a sub or two running off two or three hundred watts and you can see if that's a good enough upgrade. All I suggest is that you look at some options in between pitifully underpowered and insani-power before you set your sights on anything specific.
Good luck!

i sat in my friends car and it was movin back and forth (a little bit,not much) he got his subs from BJ's, its like a cosco, there pretty cheap. but when the volume is that high, it sounds like sh*t. i know how much bass i want from hearin guys systems at my school. So i know the rockford HE2's should pound pretty good. i listen to rap and techno and some rock, but mostly rap, i want like insane pounding and clear, no distortion> but not blow away all my money, so i think the HE2's with the 800.2 amp should be good. i know that this system will blow his away, but i was just curious at how big of a difference it would be. i guess it was kinda stupid to post this question, i was just wondering what your guys opinions were of it.

get yourself a set of 12" or 10" alpine type r subs. back them up with a mrv-t757 and nobody will compete with you.
rockfords are way highly overrated. they make killer amps but there subs are too expensive for the quality.
i got two twelves in my 85 iroc and i have yet to hear someone with a system louder for the money i paid.
i got the two subs and amp for $1300 canadian.
i have worked for a few stereo shops as an installer over the summers and know my stuff.

Who has there "claims of loudness" backed by a meter ?
My goal is to have my wife's 4th gen z28 to be the loudest f-body that retains stock t-top storage. So far we are at 146.5 db, with 2 10's, but we are shooting for a redesign of the enclosures, and shooting for a 150!
