yeah.. we all hate them, but what is there to do against them?.. me, my friend who helps me install equipement and a couple of managers/professional alam installers are trying to figure something out for my car..
i had a viper 300max alarm.. they cut the exterior sieren after finding out that riping the battery out of my car (i found it on the ground) didn't help.. 128 db isn't loud enough to attract attention.. one siren under my hood.. (i guess they found it after a while..).. it's where the distributer under kinda of my TPI.... one under my dash on the passanger side... Anyways.. deck, amps, subs (and box.. damn them.. took me a week and some, 3 24's and lots of swearing to build that!).. EVERYTHING was hidden.. except the deck.. which was a crappy JVC deck.. (well.. bottom of the top of the line ones with triple preouts 4.5v, sub controle, cd changer, etc)
so, how can i make my new system theif proof?
my old system was worth 2300$ (i am in canada.. so.. yeah.. dollar value) i got 1200 for it.. just bought a deck and some new interrior speakers with that.. subs to come after christmas.. ppl tellin me razor blades behind the deck.. weld bars over my sub box so they can't make off with it.. every wierd *** screw i can find for the subs/amps (i'm going to do that), a 140 db siren, wire my horn into the alarm, pager.. (have it fire fireworks into the air so nearby ppl will sit down at watch with picnic baskets as the events unfold.. probably what happened anyways.. 128 db is hard not to notice)
is there anything else.. (that's NOT like the razor blade idea preferably)
tnx.

I agree it sucks! The pager thing was one thing that popped into my mind. The other thing that popped into my mind was "Sounds like somebody that knew your layout"! I thought it was kinda odd that they got to everything so easy and it's like they knew everypart of your car. Sorry to hear that. Anyway a loud siren to me doesn't really cut the mustard because everytime I go to Wal-Mart someones alarm is going off and it's like it's so common that I've heard people say "I wish they'd turn that Damn thing off!" Here's what you could try http://www.caralarms-security.co.uk/antihijack.htm

LOL! Don't think that that is legal in America...but DAMN! That would be a sight to see! Seriously, a friend of mine coated every screw with epoxy before he screwed it in. Of course, he had a really hard time upgrading his system...

get a hood lock. Here's one I got: http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wf.../View/WIN00756

I have it wired so that it is only unlocked for 30 seconds after disarming the car. Alternatively, you could have it unlock with a hidden button, but I didn't like that idea.

Also, I'd stay away from the razors and such. But, use bolts, lots of them, in hard to get to places. The different screws is a good idea too. Just make it a real PITA to get the equipment out, and hope that it takes them so long that they get caught.

Sorry to hear about your stuff getting stolen. After losing 6 yes thats right 6 systems to thieves, all the way from a full Alpine system to a cheap Jensen tape deck. I've come to the following conclusions. Alarms are basically useless to stop a thief,(unless it's a couple of punks looking for an easy score) most people view them (alarms) as simply annoying background noise and ignore them.
Putting odd bolts/screws in to hold the equipment in mearly ticks the thief off, and makes them trash the interior worse, payback I guess for having to work so hard to get the stuff out. Don't ask how I know this.
A pager alarm is ok but if you go out and see some big dumb crack head trashing your car you need to think can I kick his a$$ or do I want to wait for the cops to show up (sometimes can take a while)
The best thing to do IMHO is hide everything,a guy who posted here a while back had a good idea take a stock radio face and make a cover for his aftermarket head unit (can't remember his name right now)it looked for all the world like a stock GM radio, quite ingenious I thought. Jprevost had a good idea too, hide the subs in the back behind the plastic trim. I'll be using these ideas and a few more that I've picked up from this board and hopefully my system will stay in the car this time. Not being a daily driver and parked in a locked garage should help too.

The placebo stock radio plate was Jim85IROC's. Definetely a good idea. I think also worth mentioning is not to advertise what you have... I mean, we can do all the things in the world to protect our stuff in the car, but bottom line... if they want it bad enough, theyll find a way to take it.

Around here, the kids i always here whining about their stuff getting stolen are the kids who come in to parking lots with it blasting at full tilt, sit in mall lots with it goin, and put Stereo manufacturers stickers all over their cars.

I know its a blast to pull in and have the teeth rattle on everyone around you, i enjoy it to. But whenever im going somewhere ill be away frmo the car AT ALL (mall included), i turn it down below the level of my voice before i pull in the parking lot. Aside from the 5% tint on top of the factory tint, i always carry a blanket with me in the Firebird, to toss over stuff if im really worried. I dont put the "RF" stickers on the car either...

Im not saying this is set in stone, but i know a lot of people with stereos in my area... Three kids i know got ripped off: One had stickers and jammed to his **** too much while sitting in parking lots, one jammed in parking lots and told the whole world what was i his car (they didnt rip it off, but he found his trunk lock smashed like they tried) and the third kid felt everyone in our neighborhood must love his rap msuic, so hed let us all hear it from the comfort of our living rooms... EVERYTIME HE GOT HOME.

Ive had four cars with systems in them now, only ONE has had an alarm. Ive only had one instance where someone TRIED to get in the car, and they didnt, plus i dont even know they wanted the stereo. It was the firebird, which is too flashy (im not saying its great, just that it stands out)to be drivin around at home anyway....

hope this helps...

Admrlam has pretty much the best advice here. Its common sense really... for the first time in my driving career, I have a system thats worth something and I can bet that nobody on my street knows that I have it. Its off by the time I turn into my street and I don't turn it on until I get out. There was only one time that I had something stolen and it was my head unit. I got complacent and left it on while I was working. Punched the passenger side lock and stole the whole freakin console. An alarm might have helped since it was parked right in front of a CompUSA where theres a decent amount of traffic.

Simply put, you were a MARK. Even if you don't make it obvious about whats in your car, somebody KNEW that you had something worth stealing by either watching you or word of mouth and they KNEW that you wouldn't be near enough to hear your alarm when they ripped ya off. What sucks is that they wanted it so bad that it didn't even matter that you had an alarm system. Maybe they just wanted to do it just to mess with you.

An alarm by itself is never foolproof. Thieves like to work quickly and not be noticed. Many times just parking your car in places that are well lighted and have high traffic will work. If you park your car in a yard and you have dogs that can work. Better yet, a garage. Maybe you don't have these options, but if you can at least leave it where you can easily look out of a window and see it, that may make a huge difference. A 128db siren should be plenty enough to get YOUR attention. My alarm wakes me up and my bedroom with the doors and windows closed and the car is almost 100 yards away.

Trying to leave "booby traps" or "tricks" that will make it harder to steal your stuff can backfire. First, it may be illegal (as previously mentioned). Second, if the thief gets hurt YOU can get sued. Third, instead of just losing your stereo you might find your ENTIRE CAR messed up. (Don't ask how I know this, for now I just do). If somebody wants someting bad enough, nothing will stop them from trying.

If you ever decide to do another install, keep a LOW profile with it, try your best not to let ANYONE know what you have unless you know for sure they can be trusted. And follow some of the other tips posted on this thread.

Truly sorry for your loss.

it's not at my house.. i'm in canada on an agricultural farm.. i grew up with tools and "fixing" things... closest neighbor is 1 mile away if not more.. i don't lock my car.. it's parked in the shed EVERYBODY in the town i live nearby knows of my system.. they're all pretty trustworth and i'm well respected.. nobody would dare steal my stuff.. i'm vengefull and have lots of support..
neways. only times i cranked it up publiclly was when i was in "the city".. *oouus and ahhhs here*.. yeah.. neways.. on sunday night cruise night during the summer.. but i havn't done that in a month and some.. 7 other guys got broken into that night (we had a meeting.. kinda in the parking lot).. all i had on my car indicating a system was my deck.. which i didn't take off the faceplate.. (first stupid mistake) and second was the Viper Alarms sticker (little 1"x3" sticker) on both door windows.. i dont' think i was a mark.. i think they saw a firebird (i do not play my subs in the city at all.. i cut them out.. option i had on my deck.. but it's a 1.30 hour drive to the city.. so that's pretty much when i listen to them).. looked into the window.. saw the deck and decided to go for that.. noticed the 4 guage power wire when they cut my alarm and guessed i had subs..
neways.. that's that story.. i got 1200$ from my insurance place.. minus the 200$ deductable.. bought a new deck, all of the interrior speakers.. fixed my alarm.. getting a third backup battery and second siren.. stick in the back of the car.. they'll have a damn good ol' time trying to find that one.. i'm adapt in electronics so i'm going to try and find a way to hook up an electrical current bypass when my alarm goes off that perma locks my truck.. have the key thing not work.. (never use it.. usully use my remote or the power hatch) that way they'd never be able to get to my subs.. even if they smash the hatch window. basically seal my hatch when the power goes off.. or the alarm goes off.. cut the power to the alarm.. no truck release..
neways..
all the ideas (even the burn 'em good one) were really helpfull... tnx all...
i'll post what i did when i'm all done... which should be around christmas.

trust no one......i use to work at a circuit city. i had my alarm installed there, some kids who worked there would come and check to see how it was going until it was done; never thought that they would do such a thing. turned out they were good friends with my girlfriends ex; well took me a while to add it up but, but by the time i figured it out they quit working at circuit city and i haven't found them sense......still looking though; and i will find them.

they or whoever it was popped the hood and new where everyone thing was.......since they were the only ones who new the layout of the alarm. it's an easy guess.

my next creation will be done by myself so that this won't happen. but, my biggest problem comes with car shows. everyone knows what you have and that will never change.
