Do you mean the engine pops?(not trying to be a smartarse) It just reminded me of two wks ago when I would floor it my engine would backfire(pop) and it turned out to be the timing , apparently the bolt holding down the dist. was loose so the timing moved with the vibration of the engine.

Could be a couple of different things. Possibly a timing problem. Too far advanced or retarted will produce a pop. It could also be A/F mixture. Too lean or too rich will cause a stutter when you dump it off of idle. I don't know the Edelbrock carb well enough to say how to adjust it, but I had the same problem with my Holley. Turned out to be the accelerator pump cam.

sorry I was really tired when I wrote that. I don't know how to time my car and I am having trouble finding a place that will do a high performance car like mine. I have it in a good spot but I know it could be better plus it spits black smoke. My friend brought up a good point that it might not be getting enough air. Because it seems that if I turn the A/F screws in so far that it is about to stall out and it still spits black.

Whew! Oh yeah and I have a harmonic balancer cover that I have no idea how to read it seems so much easier without the cover and just the line on the balancer. Thanks for any help

The AF screws have nothing to do with full throttle acceleration that is for idle only. I don't know what this popping sounds like, but if it's spitting black smoke it's probably not detonation, unless it's oil smoke. Check your plugs. If they're black then timing is too retarded, If they're white then timing is too advanced. Also check to make sure your cat isn't plugged up. That will also cause rich condition.
