cold engine problems

My 86 lg4 ta just recieved a q-jet rebuild, and the car runs....well fine when it is warm, but when the car is cold, it has a terrible hessitation. It seems to have a dead spot in the throttle, and if i'm at a stop and floor it it will start spinning the tires and then quit everything and almost quit then take then it takes back off after it spits and sputers. Does it need rebuilt again?

Sounds like your choke thermostat and linkage. If it does this while it is cold. I had the same problem, as soon as I got up to say 180 then I was fine. But damn that hesitation was bad and I also had a bit of black smoke at first too.

pardon me for my ignorance, but is that the same as the "pull off valve"? someone told me that could be my problem. If not, could that also be my problem? What kinda cash and labor am I looking at for this job?

Yes that would be the linkage I was talking about. It would make more sense to do it yourself, much cheaper. Grab yourself a book by Roe on Rochester Carbs. It's a Bible for these, they have them at the library if you dont want to buy it.

Thanks, I think I will do that.

How much do you think that would cost me?

Carb kit is cheap, just remember it doesn't come with much just the gaskets. If you take the carb off you will need to by a base gasket as well. Also if there is any failing parts like a TPS or Choke thermostat. Those rarely go bad but it is still a concern to have. You are looking at like 35 for the rebuild kit and 10 or so for the base gasket and then you should be fine. If you need those other two items i mentioned they are around 20 each or so. It really depends on where you go, I go to Napa. Also there is the float to be concerned with if it leaks or not. The kit will give you a needle and seat but no float. Those are around 10 to 20 dollars depending on the style you go with. They make like three of four different ones that will fit for that carb. Standing at the front or your engine look on the right hand side of your carb and there is a series of numbers on it, they should start like 1708**** something. You need that number for ordering. Hope this helps you.

Wait I must have taken you wrong. Your talking about rebuilding the whole thing right? I thought that I could just fix that pull off thing. is that possible?

Yes, you can change the pull-off and choke linkages without digging into the carb again.

Keep in mind one thing about carbs that simply can't be totally fixed on a street car....

The automatic choke will open fully after less than 5 minutes run time even on a cold day BUT the intake manifold can take up to 20 minutes to heat up. In that "in-between" time the car will not run very well, especially at WOT. Just how carbs are. Once fully warmed up, however, it should run extremely well- comparable to fuel injection if it's really dialed in.

Trust me I know it wouldn't run like fuel injection, but all I'm looking for is to keep it from quiting. The hesitation is so bad, that it will stall out even at 20 or 30 mph. It really sucks
